So I have had an idea for a character stuck in my mind for a while now and I really wanna put it into action but I am having trouble. I want to create a character with water based powers/abilities but I can't find any 4e powers that are even remotly close to what I want. I'm going for a mage/warrior kinda thing (something close to swordmage) except I really want him to be wielding a tridant which doesn't really work with the swordmage class. Not sure what I can do with this so any input would be really appreciated.

Water Gensai Tridentmage. Ask your DM to let you use a trident instead of a sword. Point out how a trident is way worse than a sword, and it would be cool to swap the two.

In addition to the above, "Defender who uses the power of the ocean to crush her foes" sounds a lot like a Paladin of Melora to me. Avenger if you're into the whole Striker thing.

You might also pick a class which has the abilities and fighting style you want and simply reflavor. I've found that's almost always the best option in 4e, though I've had a heck of a time convincing people that mechanics != flavor.

Can you narrow down the role any, as well as preference for melee vs ranged, or are you pretty well open to anything if it delivers enough of a water theme?

I've done my share of reflavouring. The trick is to take a non-specific class and give it a theme. Although the swordmage is kinda specific when it comes to damage types, picking up a lightning weapon will make that problem go away. Think about it; water+lightning. That's a pretty cool theme, right? Take sword burst and a few powers with the right theme and BANG you have a water-class! If the swordmage is not your thing then I recommend any martial or primal class, the avenger, runepriest and warpriest of the earth domain. Also, look at the Avatar classes in the homebrew section. Convince your DM on allowing you to use your weapon as an implement (or allow you to use ki focuses) and pick out some of the waterbender's encounter/at-will/daily powers. The Waterbender is a leader-class so if you're looking for striker/defender you might want to fix them a bit.

There is a magical trident called "wave". it is a +3 magic weapon that gives you swim speed. Showing your DM this will probably convince him of allowing you to have swim speed, even though he might decide that the powers comes from your trident.

The trident is a one-handed weapon, so i recommend another (off-hand) weapon depending on your class. Spiked Gauntlet for brawler fighter or a light-blade for thief/rogue. Also, a (water)whip and whip multiclass feat sounds like a cool idea.

Dude! Make him an executioner, with Sheltering Dark (utility) at lvl 6 and use a garrote along with garrote multiclass feat. The garrote is actually a bubble of water which you use to drown your enemies. Sheltering dark can be described as a ring of water rises from the ground and as soon as you walk through it, you become a watery mist, effectively invisible to those around you. Also pick up world serpent's grasp (feat) to knock your enemies prone when you strangle them.

You could also play a whirling barbarian that specializes in reach-attacks and pushing. You can easily get a 3 square push with an at-will power of you pick out the right items. Is trident a polearm? If not, ask your DM to make an exception and start taking polearm feats! Also, there is an intimidate utility powers that pushes all enemies in blast 3 one square, you could call it "The Rising Tide" and say "I summon a wave of water that slams my enemies, making them stagger backwards".

What role are you looking for and what are your fav classes?

Wardens have some water themed shapes.  With a little reflavoring you could make a sweet watersoul genasi stormwarden with some thematic powers.

For example:

Winter's herald (create ice all around you)
Breath of Chaos (become insubstantial and shift)
Clutching Mire
Treacherous Ice
Hunting Shark
Drown in Mud
Masking Fog
Land Shark Charge
Agony Tide

Also, don't underestimate other races. Human can be reflavoured into ANYTHING.

Wow lots of good idea's that I haden't even thought of (sry it took so long for a repost but I have been super busy this last week). Thanks for all the feed back. I refigured him to be a warrior with pole arm feats (switched tridant for halberd but I am using it as a "count as" great tridant) after I read the article about the water themed magic weaposn here: www.wizards.com/DnD/Article.aspx?x=dnd/d... I am planing on eventualy using a Whirlpool Halberd and other aquaticly themed items. I am thinking about multi classing either Paladin of Melora (or similar water god), or maybe take a look at the Warden class. Right now I am tailoring most of his strategy to knock down or pushing abilities since that is what water does. This will make him a kind of dual Striker/Defender since he can keep enimies from getting past him while dealing out some pretty decent damage. Let me know what you think.

Also I made him a human too (my first human character actually). I usually don't like to play humans because well I am one so they always seem kinda boring to me, so I like to go with the more unusual races the game has to offer.

Please post the character here each level. You have obviously put a lot of work into it and I know there are people who would love to play a similarly themed character, but don't have your ambition of making it perfect. I would personally love to see this character in my group.

I once went through and made a level 4 character for each of the genasi souls, picking a class that I felt fit with their manifestation. What I came to for the watersoul was inspired by Bruce Lee. "Be like water, if water goes into a cup, it becomes the cup". So I opted for a monk, with lots of pusheing and proning and moving. Doesn't have to be a genasi at all, but I feel the monk best describes a water based class.
