I've always wanted to be a vampire in a game, but eventhough finding/creating a vampire class/prestige class won't be that hard becuause we have a great DM, i have another poblem. If i were to be a vampire what would be the best class to base myself around??? Like a warrior, arcane caster, or rouge. Would it even make a difference?? Please reply.:fight!: or or

Vampire's what?

Grammar aside, playing a vampire PC will make the game less fun for your friends as they must accomadate your various limitations, and your array of funky powers.

If you must do it, choose a divine casting class.

I heard of a game that one guy took ages to write a campaign based around vampires... The players killed the head vampire on the first session... So be a totally evil dude... dude! and I would be a rogue, because they just live in darkness and shadow so it would be a given that they would be naturally adept at being silent and sneaky, just my personal preference by I can see a vampire sneaking being someone through shadows just to slit someone's throat and/or drink his blood- and in bed by dawn remember!

Or you could just take a level in commoner to represent your normal, uneventful human life, then be special'd into being a dirgesinger regardless of not meeting requirements. Then you could be the oversexed emogoth angst case every vampire dreams to be.

...Pardon my bigotry. I hate it when people try to play vampires, they're predatory, single-minded killing machines and I can't see their ugly asses ever managing to have a good reason to go out doing anything but drinking anything that isn't an undead minion.

Something that doesn't mind losing enormous amount of levels and hitpoints... You lose 8 levels to LA and that's very difficult to take for most classes. Hit&Run and behind-the-scenes trickery, use lots of minions and dirty tricks, always know the opponent and battlefield beforehand (do they have silver, spellcasting, can they be lured away one by one, can they be gotten to before they meet you etc)

Minimise direct combat as you'll die fast. Maximise on your movement modes, domination and other advantages. You'll shine in an intrigue heavy city adventure and the like.

Vampires in D&D are in fact bloodthirsty machines. They have their roots in folklore, and folklore does not paint a pretty picture of the walking dead. Even Bram Stoker's take on Dracula isn't pretty when you take the time to actually read the novel. It's only been in the last 15 or 20 years that modern fiction has morphed vampires from largely mindless walking corpses with a thirst for living blood to romanticized emo kids who are just misunderstood.

Play a Shadow Sun Ninja, and ask your DM if you can keep playing him if he dies to the 10th level class feature. If not, then don't play a Vampire. It isn't worth the level adjustment or loss of the Con score. Dominate Person at will seems nice at first, but in practice the DC will be so low it won't matter.

I recommend Libris mortis' Vampire Spawn class. You still lose 8 character levels, but at least 4 are racial HD.

Wait till level 20 (or whatever max level you have), then make a deal with a god (half-fiend/half-celestial/fiendish/celestial), get bit by everything in an animal shelter (every lycanthrope template), then become a vampire. Looky there 20+ LA from templates that doesn't penalize you.

LA talks aside, the vampire template gives a number of bonuses that are beneficial to several different classes.

Universal

Energy Drain and Create Spawn are very powerful. You can field your own army of undead minions and sap the life out of enemies with a touch, which heals you also. The ability modifiers are potent and spider climb/gaseous form at will has amazing utility. Undead immunities help survivability. Fast Healing 5 rocks.

Drawback: Standard weaknesses, Good aligned Paladins and Clerics will usually rock you. Limited periods of operation due to sunlight weakness. Water weakness more of a pain than it seems, as is not being able to enter a dwelling without being invited.

Barbarian

High Str and Dex with Natural Armor make for potent melee combatant. High base Fort save covers lack of Con.

Drawback: No Con means shorter Rage. D12 HD results in net loss of HP for Barb due to lack of Con. Dominate traditionally weak as Cha is a dump stat for most Barb's.

Bard

Bonuses to Cha and several key skills. Dominate more powerful due to higher Cha. D12 HP signifigantly better than D6, even with the lose of a Con bonus. Great Reflex save.

Drawback: No Con and low base Fort save makes Disintegrate dangerous.

Cleric

Ability bonuses all around useful. Ability to create your own personal army of undead with spellcasting and Create spawn combined, then augment them with Rebuke. High Cha for extra Rebuking. Natural Armor combines with Heavy armor and shield proficiency to make a very high AC. D12 HD results in a net gain of HP on average. Spontaneous Inflict spells result in extra fast healing when needed.

Drawback: Low Reflex save. Easily one of the more powerful vampire/class combinations.

Druid

As a class that revolves around nature, I see it difficult for a vampire to retain his/her powers. Personal opinion beside...

Bonuses to WIS and CHA for spells and Wild Empathy. INT bonus for extra skills, Racial Skill bonuses very useful. Natural Armor augments weak armor proficiencies. D12 HD results in a net average increase in HP. Wild Shape powerful combined with Energy Drain.

Drawbacks: Low Reflex save. Several Druid special abilities, immunity to poison, bonus to Will save vs Fey, timeless body, become useless with undead immunities.

Fighter

Str and Dex bonuses great, Int bonus for more skill points, Natural Armor. Low Will save covered by undead traits.

Drawback: D12 HD with a lack of Con results in below average HP for a fighter. Lower Reflex save. Traditionally low DOminate DC as Cha is usually a dump stat.

Monk

All ability modifiers very useful. Racial skill bonuses great. High saves. Spell Resistance at higher levels useful, Outsider abilities also good. D12 HD results in a net gain of HP on average. Natural Armor and Monk AC bonus combine.

Drawback: Few. Disease and poison immunity class features useless. Dominate traditionally weaker as Cha is the one stat Monk's don't usually care about.

Paladin

Not feasible unless DM makes exception for good vampire.

Str, Wis, and Cha bonuses very good. High saves due to Cha. Natural Armor with heavy armor proficiency. High Dominate DC from Cha.

Drawback: D12 HD results in a net loss of HP on average. Lay on Hands and Divine Health class features not useful on PC. Feeding restriction makes fall from grace easy.

Rogue

All ability bonuses good, Racial skills excellent. Natural Armor makes up for light armor proficiency. D12 HD better than D6, results in net gain of HP even with lack of Con bonus. Typically very high Reflex save, Dominate traditionally more powerful as some Rogues utilize Cha. Low Will save covered by Undead traits.

Drawback: Few. Low Fort save makes some spells dangerous.

Sorcerer/Wizard

Int bonus good for Wiz, Cha bonus better for Sorc. Dex bonus and Natural Armor help cover lack of Armor Proficiency. Natural attack excellent weapon with energy drain. D12 HD vast improvement over D4, giving Sorc/Wiz more HP on average. Spawn useful as bodyguards.

Drawback: Limited familiar options. Low Fort and Reflex saves. Will save bonus largely useless given Undead traits. Lack of armor makes Sorc/Wiz's still easy to hit, even with Natural Armor.

You omitted the fact that they don't tire after rage, which is pretty useful.

It has been a long time since I played and even longer since I needed to know the vampire stats. However, do D&D vampires really need permission to enter a dwelling? That requirement seems so very contrary to the D&D style of monster I would expect (and seem to recall from years ago). Is that requirement in one of the add-on books or is it in the core rules for a vampire?

Thanks. I don't like it and would consider DMing vampires without that restriction or allowing them a feat or access to a power that lets at least some of them to ignore this restriction.

You have to remember vampires (arguably) are influenced from two sources:

1. Buffy (errrrm.... yeah)
2. Dracula

Both of these types of vampires, as well as the vampires of folklore (that's where Dracula comes in) suffered this restriction.

Could tinker around with Dread Necromancer(Heroes of Horror, I think?) and replace lich abilities with vampire ones if you wanted to. Will take a bit of work, however.

However, if you have PHBII, Beguiler works for a crafty, sneaky...Well, beguiling vampire. Good skill points and the ability to charm people.

Well, I've always loved vampires, but lots of people already know that. Anyway, I've made two creations that you and/or your DM might find useful:

My modified vampire template. I made this one a while ago. The idea was to allow for weaker vampires, that would gain power as they gained levels. I also added some new mechanics, and changed a few others around for personal flavor. These don't make particularly good PCs though, which is where the second one comes in...

My unliving vampire tempalte takes a lot from the first one, but adds in "vampire levels", which help with the level adjustment. I created a subtype of undead called "unliving" which takes away a lot of the immunities. The goal was to create a weak, but still LA +0 vampire that you could enhance with class levels.

I don't know that your DM will want to implement this, but it might be worth a shot. The nice thing about it is that it doesn't eat into your class level, allowing you a greater variety of class choices without totally crippling your character.

Not in the least. I don't even know you. I was just making fun of the rouge/rogue mix-up. Check the bolded parts in the quotes. I apologize for giving you the wrong impression: I did not intend to offend you.

That's like saying i think that Jutter is a nerd because he likes computers.

Well, I confess to being a nerd. Immediately. Guilty as charged. Since I'm hanging around on a D&D message board, it's pretty obvious. ;)

I hate computers though. The bloody things always give up on me when I have a deadline.

As suggested before, a cleric vampire is a beautiful and nasy piece of work. Once used a BBEG that was a drow cleric of Canazots who was 'blessed' wit a visit from a Vampire lord assassin (I belive they are in the d20 modern, search wizards for it.) and made into one of his advisors. Drow vampires are horribly synergetic, with the drows natural affinity to avoid the sunlight already, that mainly leaves running water that is avoidable in a subterranian enviroment. Toss on there the spell stitched from monster manual 2, boosts the undead and gives extra spells for having a high wisdom, the same wisdom a cleric needs ^_^.

Vampires in DnD don’t really work as player races. You might look in to a company called White Wolf. They made their mark on the RPG community by creating a vampire role playing game. They don’t use the D20 system but their system is really easy to pick up. It revolves around D10s, lots and lots of D10.

I don't know if anyone else mentioned but there is a vampire class in the Libris Mortis. If I was you I would check with your fellow players first because vampires have weird rules. Like you can't cross moving water, so somebody has to carry you. Or you can't be near mirrors. Also somebody has to carry your coffin.

That sounds like LARP, which isn’t the same as playing table top.

LARP is Live Action Role Play, it’s when you actually physically pretend to be your character. You can’t use the dice when you are moving around all over the place so the system uses rock, paper, scissors and a deck of cards instead of dice.

When you play Table Top White wolf games it is just the d10s.
