So, I've got a light-hearted pirate one-shot coming around the corner. The DM describes it as Muppet Treasure Island meets Pirates of the Caribbean. Anyway, it uses a non-d20 system that makes character creation very quick, and even weapon of choice becomes purely a matter of fluff. I was going to go with chucking starfish, like Gonzo from Muppet Treasure Island, but we're going to have at least one ninja. I'll leave the shuriken starfish to them. But now I'm not sure what to do. I want to go with someone other than the usual rapier and pistol. Any ideas?

For character concept, I'm playing a bearded dragon (anthropomorphic of course). Central idea: "Hello. My name is Bladebeard. You have killed my parrot. Prepare to die." Currently I can't come up with better than trying to bowl over my opponents, ramming them with my beard spines. Thoughts?

Well you can have a Gunsword, that is a sword with a gun built into the handle. Very useful actually in naval actions since gund require careful reloading and in close action you generally only fired it once then drew your sword.

But that is hardly original.

How about a large harpoon? Also not orriginal but.....

Instead of a Gun-sword, how about a Musket-Harpoon. That is a Harpoon with a built in Musket.

Or better yet, a Bottle of Rum!

You use it as a club, that is until it breaks, and then you stab people with it. You can also use it as a grenade weapon (using overproof rum), just pop off the cork, take a swig, stuff a cloth in the neck, light it and throw.

Enchanted (dead) parrot? Maybe one that shoots eggs, instead of being used as a club?

I'd go with a crowbar, myself. Stab, smash, trip, and you can burst chest locks with it. Though that may not be silly enough.

I encourage the use of the afore-mentioned dead parrot as a club. Except that it isn't just a normal parrot; "it's friggin' huge!" Also, it isn't really dead, just mostly dead (or at least heavily drugged). Thus, it occasionally lets out an awkward and surprised squawk when you land a hit.

Cutlass, complete with a special leather grip on the back of the blade instead of the scabbard - so you can hold it in your teeth of course!

The harpoon musket sounds promising. I laughed at the dead parrot thing. It'll have to be fully dead, because remember: "My name is Bladebeard. You have killed my parrot. Prepare to die." The cutlass could work too.

Btw, some of the other players have got their character ideas as well:
- an anthro turtle sea monster/treasure hunter who specializes in cannons and shell attacks
- a monkey in the crow's nest, counts as several crew for manning the ship, since she can use the opposable feet and tail to help as well. (Inspired by Pirates Cove. This game has various "parrot cards" that give you certain benefits. One allows you to fire all of your cannons regardless of crew needs. Another is actually a parrot of holding. Of course the DM is writing that one in). Also may have a screeching doom attack
- a Swedish chef

Ahh the gunblade. Which FF was that from again? I think Squall had one in VIII

Yeah, that's what I was thinking; the egg thing was me having a moment's remembrance of Donkey Kong Country 2, but I was also thinking of the Monty Python sketch.

Thanks for all the thoughts so far. I'm thinking of going with a cutlass "Swiss army knife." With a built-in harmonica. Note that I actually own a harmonica and can play a recognizable portion of Kermit's "The Rainbow Connection." Although it looks like I may have a chance to go with the throwing starfish route after all - I haven't heard any more from our pirate ninja.

Have a starfish you can use like an ocerana/harmonica

How about a bucket of eels, as thrown weapons? Bludgeoning 1d2, electricity 1d4.

Your wooden leg is a musket?

Lift your eyepatch and a random beam shoots out? Freezing ray, laser, small lightning bolt, jet of acid, etc. -- each a different color, of course! :D And to add silliness, each beam is accompanied by appropriate music! "Stormy Weather" for the lightning, "Baby It's Cold Outside" for the ice ray, and so on!

Ok, now I'm going to have to get some electric eel numchuks (ok, how do you actually spell that?).

On the parrot weapon thing i can't stress how important it is, if you plan on using it as a weapon, to make sure it's is/was a Norwegian Blue

Swallows was in the Holy Grail, the dead parrot was in a sketch in the Flying Circus. John Cleese bought a parrot from a pet shop, and tried to return it about 30 mins later because it was dead. Very funny sketch.

It was in FF8

However the Gunblade is an actual weapon used largely in the late 1700s and early 1800s in the navy. In close action and boarding other ships you generally didn't have a chance to reload your gun and only fired it once before tossing it aside, and in fact naval pistols were specially wieghted so after firing them off they could be held by the barrel and used as a club.

Another idea would be a Muscled Ogre Sailor who uses an Anchor as a giant club.

Or Bard who sings sea chanties, but get your DM to give you approval to alter the spell list to be more Seafaring like.

Animate Rope, Obscuring Mist, Spider Climb (for climbing up hulls and masts) are possible useful spells in the ocean,

Well, there was a type of weapon called a Duckfoot. Perhaps your character uses instead the whole duck ?

Nunchaku, I believe, is the correct spelling. Bastardized Western versions vary.
