Warlord and Swordmage: Multiclass into what?

Sep 23, 2008 19:45:50 For an upcoming game I was planning on playing a Dragonborn character but the question is it more effective to start as a Warlord and take the multiclass feat for the Swordmage or vice versa.

Now I know the race isn't a good choice for a Swordmage but the image that is shown with the Anarch of Shyr Paragon Path is just so cool looking I am want to create the dragonborn in the artwork.

Recall that multiclassing in 4E is quite a different animal than in past editions. You don't pick up all of the class features of your second class - just a smattering of powers. Using encounter, utility, and/or daily powers from your second class requires you to burn additional multiclass feats, so you have quite an opportunity cost there.

So my advice is to pick which class you like the best of warlord and swordmage. If you like the party-boosting powers of the warlord, multiclass to swordmage. If you're itching to play with the swordmage Ageas (likely spelled wrong this early in the morning), multiclass to warlord.

Sep 24, 2008 7:57:32 Well I know the multiclass rules but I mean the feat to multiclass feat for the swordmage doesn't mention anything on using Light & Heavy Blades as implements but there are still Swordmage spells that are weapon based

Sep 24, 2008 15:07:43 It mostly depends on what you want your character to do. Since these are two different roles, do you want to be mostly a leader (healing, buffing, positioning) with a smattering of defending, or a defender with a touch of leader?

What is everybody else in your group playing? If there's already going to be a full-time leader, and no defender, then it'll probably be better to go Swordmage base + Warlord MC. If there's a defender, then vice versa.
