I am starting my first character and first D&D game with some other newbies and an experienced DM. He had us all get the Essentials books and I want to play an Elf Cleric. From a roleplay view I like the idea of playing a Sun Domain but as I look at the powers he gets to use and then the Storm Domain's, it seems like the Storm guy would be way more powerful. Am I just too new to see the benefits of some of the Sun Domain powers or are they a lot more boring than the Storm. Likee I said, I just liked the idea of worshipping the sun god off the bat but it seems like myy party would benefit more from the other.

If you've never played before, and the DM is experienced, I am sure he'll allow some leeway.

Build both out till like level 3. Play one for 2 sessions. Play the other.

(Same character name, same character traits, different powers.)

Also, but that might be a little much on a first run, 4e was designed around the ability to reflavor your own powers. So even if you do end up with either Sun or Storm, you could easily write that your powers were granted you by Asmodeus, Sehanine, or that magic rock in your pocket.
