| #1necromancer_nitsujMay 28, 2008 11:49:31 | Hello. I am about to get paid in a few days, and I have made my mind up to buy another supplement to my D&D book collection. I am trying to get them all. Anyways. I have only four books. Drow of the Underdark, Libris Mortis, Plyer's Handbook, and the Monster Manual. Now I am going to buy another book. Tell me what you think I should get. I prefer the stealthy type, rogue, bard, etc. Now I have found four of my favorite classes that I usually just create a character I never use with. Druid, Bard, Rogue, Wizard (Necromancer). Those are my favorites, though I have made one character with each class. (Horribly, I might add.) I have just recently added the bard to my list, and I am a necromancy freak. I have even created classes that combine necromancy with the core classes. (I consider Necroblade a failure, but I think the Musical Undead Inspirer was a success.) So, what should I get? Complete Adventurer? Complete Divine? Complete Arcane? Heroes of Horror? |
| #2i_roll_onesMay 28, 2008 13:30:54 | Complete Adventurer: Has some feats to combine monk/paladin with stuff, which are not bad. Virtuso and Fochlurian Lyrist work well for bard, but the latter is druid/bard. Probably not going to be a Necromancer. Heroes of Horror has the Dread Necromancer, which might be right up your alley. Complete Divine, unfortunately, is jam packed with god-specific prestige classes, which can get rather annoying after a while. And while it has interesting options(Such as our friend, Divine Metamagic) combining cleric/rogue isn't going to work. True Necromancer/MT is probably a better path for Cleric/spell caster. For druid options, this is just my opinion, but unless you want to spend Wild Shape charges on buffing yourself, the feats are not going to help you much. Or unless you want to corrupt/Consecrate spells(Do Holy/Unholy damage, if I recall correctly) The Stormlord could be fun, but its more blasting things to death. I don't think that's what you want out of a druid. I really do not recommend the Blighter, I think it is silly mechanics and RP wise. Complete Arcane/Mage both have good stuff divided between the two. Complete Arcane has the Warlock, which might appeal to you, but maybe not. Sorta strapped hard for skills, and some of the best warlocks have little or no charisma. Warmage is again, blasty. If you don't mind a watered down wizard, Wu Jen might be interesting, if you don't mind the element flavor. Player's handbook II has some interesting character options, different starting packages, and the beguiler class, a mix of some wizard spells focused on well, beguiling and rogue. Also remember that some groups are doing 4e...So check those personals to find someone or draft a friend into a game, and see which verison to use. Just my first thoughts. |
| #3necromancer_nitsujMay 28, 2008 13:55:18 | Thanks. I was probably going to get Complete Adventurer anyways. Seems the best for a bard, or at least it sounds that way. But who knows, during my adventuring with a bard I may find someone using a class that appeals to me, and I would then wasted my money buying a book that I did not need. But what I just said just contradicted what I stated before. (I want to get them all.) Lol. |
| #4drmorganesMay 28, 2008 15:52:39 | Complete Adventurer and/or Complete Scoundrel are great for stealthy scoundrel types. Also... you may wish to reconsider waiting to invest in your 3.5 library. 4th Edition launches on June 6th. Take a look at the new PHB to see if your group will be moving toward the new rules. Then hit eBay to see what deals you can find on 3.5 Edition materials :D |
| #5on_the_wings_of_tpkMay 28, 2008 15:58:44 | Tome of Battle is hands down the best product WotC has produced to date. |
| #6necromancer_nitsujMay 28, 2008 15:59:58 | Yeah. But, I live in a hell-hole. It will take longer for them to get here. But, I just might do that. |
| #7Omnirahk_half-RahkshiMay 28, 2008 16:14:31 | Heroes of Horror. It's got the dread necromancer plus the archivist. I really like the archivist. It's a class for a seeker of forbidden lore, and I just love the concept of the Dark Knowledge class feature. It actually works a little bit like a bard, by being the expert on the baddies rather than being inspiring. |
| #8WickMay 28, 2008 16:24:24 | Why not the 4E PHB? I guess you are not planning on joining us in 4E. |
| #9ZuggsterMay 28, 2008 17:44:57 | Complete Adventurer and/or Complete Scoundrel are great for stealthy scoundrel types. I agree, although I'd add Complete Arcane. Those 3 books I'd pick up next for your 3rd ed collection. Complete Divine would be 4th on the list (a far 4th) based on the classes you like. |
| #10necromancer_nitsujMay 28, 2008 18:51:32 | Why not the 4E PHB? I guess you are not planning on joining us in 4E. I am. I have made the decision, and follow DrMorgane's advice, and I am going to wait until the 4E PHB comes out. I am fairly new to D&D, so I should be able to get into the 4E ruleset. |
| #11Myst_the_MoonscoutMay 29, 2008 1:13:22 | Oops, neglected the last post. I'll leave this here anyway. Complete Soundrel is my favourite of the series. It's built around being sneaky and a trickster and that's how I like to play. . I do plan on getting Complete Aventurer at some point (I also have Arcane and Warrior with Arcane being my second most used.) |
| #12dead_poolMay 31, 2008 3:49:06 | Why not the 4E PHB? I guess you are not planning on joining us in 4E. i would like to take this oprotunity to thank all of you 4E coolaid drinkers. thanks to all of you completely buying into 4E and selling your 3.5 books it has made rounding out my book collection sooo much cheaper. |
| #13doomsoughtMay 31, 2008 13:31:45 | allong with your books you may want this. Some of them are quite useless but others are a great help. if you have to pick, get feats and the races. for a book, Tome of Battle. It is you key to being a non spell caster and balancing with the mages easily. Don't miss the feat that lets you use Dex for damage. |
| #14candinMay 31, 2008 15:11:41 | Complete Scoundrel - has skill tricks that anybody can use! |
| #15i_roll_onesMay 31, 2008 16:32:39 | ToB might work for the Swordsage(A bit like the monk, but with 6 skills points per level and the potential for awesome shadow-based abilities and a decent class skill list), but if the melee wants to play it...Shouldn't they get the book? Nothing wrong with it(I like ToB), but everyone should bring something to the table, ESPECIALLY if they want to use it for their own characters. |
| #16apollyonschosenMay 31, 2008 17:09:44 | PHB2 has the Duskblade,Knight,Dragon Shaman, and Beguiler classes. New feats ,spells etc....definitely worth the price of admission....Tome of Battle is pure awesome in a can. Complete anything except Psi,Mage and a few others as they need other books that tie into them. Tome of Magic is cool as is Magic Of Incarnum. |
