| #1Lord_MagikuAug 31, 2009 17:39:14 | With my birthday tomorrow, I'll have some change, and I'm thinking of buying a 3.5 book. But, which to buy? Does anyone have personal favorites? I'd like the book to be player-oriented. Suggestions? (I only have the PH1, MM1, AND DMG1) |

| #3oxybeAug 31, 2009 19:39:36 | depends really. the "Complete X" series is generally well received as player material. depending on your character preference each book will offer different things, but Warrior, Arcane/Mage & Divine are your best bets. the 3 compendiums (magic item, spell & rules) are nice to have, if only one per table. i hear good things about Tome of Battle, but i've never even seen it at our FLGS |

| #5vilettaAug 31, 2009 23:49:26 | I don't like Tome of Magic, personally. Shadowcasters are fairly borked, and Truenamers are utterly broken (as in nonfunctional), so all it really has of note is Binders. The Complete series is always good to have, yes, as it's fairly standard, but it's not all that spectacular. Still, picking up Complete Blah for your class type of choice is usually a good idea (unless it's Complete Warrior). I also don't recommend Expanded Psionics Handbook, as the vast majority of its content is available for free in the SRD. For the number one splatbook in all of 3.5, go with Tome of Battle. It's awesome. It makes melee characters legitimately useful, powerful, viable, and interesting. Get this long before picking up Complete Warrior. The Spell Compendium is probably more useful to spellcasters than Complete Arcane/Mage, and has... well... a lot of spells. It's exactly what it says on the tin, and very good at it. The Magic Item Compendium is also a good 'un, though depending on how your gaming group operates, that may be of more use for the DM. |

Any others? |

If you like playing warriors then get Book Of Nine Swords to play more versatile warriors and do stuff other than "I attack". If you like playing roguish then get Complete Adventurer for interesting game mechanics stuff and perhaps inspirational ideas.
