| #1holymistJul 01, 2008 14:56:35 | I most likely have this thread in the wrong place. but my friends and I are just going to be starting a campaign, the only problem is that there is 3 of us they both decided on playing a warlock and a wizard. so now I'm trying to figure out what class would help out the most. I'm leaning towards the Warlord, fighter or cleric in that order, but don't really know if a warlord can play the defender role very well. and if I choose Fighter we won't have a healer which might kill us, and a cleric will be good for healing but we would get raped by anything getting close to us. any help would be appreciated. |

Since you need a healer and a tank, why not be both? Also, with a warlock and a wizard in the party, you’ll have a monopoly on like 90% of the magic items you find. :D |

Either way, your DM will have to tweak encounters down to fit them for 3 players, instead of the usual 4+. Take the class you want. A good DM will base his encounters on the party he's working with. |

Take Paladin powers like Paladin's Judgment (Paladin Attack 1), which allows a nearby PC to spend a healing surge even if you miss, while dishing out 3[W] to the enemy, or Invigorating Smite (Paladin Attack 3), which heals you and allies if you are bloodied w/o needing to spend a surge. A high Wisdom and the Healing Hands feat will also help. Taking the Student of Battle feat will allow you to use the Warlord's Inspiring Word class feature once per day. Inspiring Word allows another PC to spend a healing surge, and gain an additional amount of hit points back. I'd recommend playing either a Human (for the bonus feat and the bonus to defenses) or a Dragonborn. Take Student of Battle as soon as possible, preferably at 1st level. At first level get either plate armor, or scale armor and a shield, and a decent weapon that does at least 1d8 damage. Your goal in combat should be to stand between the wizard and the enemy. The Warlock is better off moving around the battlefield, gaining concealment from his Shadow Walk class feature. Suggest to the Warlock's player that he choose the Fey Pact; his ability to teleport around the battlefield will allow you to focus on protecting the wizard; just remind the warlock to stay close by in case he needs healing. The warlock may also want to take Thievery, since you have no rogue, and the wizard might think of playing an Eladrin, in order to take skills the party is lacking. Tell your DM to look in the DMG for advice on what to do with a weaker than normal party. The DM should reduce the number of foes you face per encounter or you will be overwhelmed quickly. |
