I think you should play a Paladin.

As a defender, the Paladin helps pull monsters off the squishy ranged strikers.

As a secondary-leader, the Paladin helps shore up the Warlord's healing.

As a melee-combatant, the Paladin gives the Warlord another guy to use his best powers on.

Swordmages are neat though. I just started playing a 5th level Eladrin Assault Swordmage, and was surprised at effective he was at pulling enemies away from the rest of the party. Literally pulling thanks to at-will Lightning Lure. Figuratively pulling thanks to being able to mark and run.

What level are all the characters in your party? Is the Warlord tactical, inspiring, or resourceful? Is the Rogue a brutal scoundrel, an artful dodger, or a combat acrobat?

Edit: All the classes are equally nice. In the end you should just play what you want. There is only a small difference between "best" and "not best."

Your group has A LOT of strikers, and no Controllers. In matter of being useful to your group, I would suggest a swordmage.

The fighter is a defender with a pinch of striker. Your group doesn't need that. But there is no controller in your team. The swordmage is a defender with something of controller. That would be best. Get some close / area attacks (to kill minions and swarms), choose Aegis of Shielding (you do not need to deal dmg - leave dmg for the rest of your team).

But this is what is best for the group. You should play with the class you want to.

Hmm... 3 Strikers and 1 Leader... Your missing some roles in your team. I'd say, play Swordmage, since it has partial controller functions that can attack multiple targets. With a Warlord around, you practically NEED a defender, so that it can support you not only for healing, but also for positioning you to effective places on the battlefield or give you additional bonuses on damage and attack rolls.

I really don't think it's such a major issue, just play the concept you would like to be and think is most fun.

A two-handed brute, a defensive knight in shining armor and shield or a graceful swordsman enhanced by magic. These are examples of typical defenders, and even more archetypes is possible to make.

How do you envision your defender?

Well, your best bet is either the Swordmage or Fighter. As a fighter, you can keep the enemies on you better, you're "stickier". However, like Xophix said, your group needs a controller, and Swordmages are good for that role. If you play a swordmage, take the defense aegis. You aren't going to be as good as a fighter at keeping the baddies stuck to you, so you need to reduce the damage that your allies take. Aegis of Assault is worthless IMO.

One thing that could help (if you decide to play a fighter instead of a swordmage) is to take a reach weapon, like that one spear (greatspear?) out of Adventurer's vault, and using that. Then take the Polearm Master PP out of Martial Power. That will make you even deadlier. Either choice is fine, though. Both are better than the other in different scenarios. Pick the one you want to play, and have fun with it.

Coronal Guard lets you do your job better. Personally, I'd go with that, but in the end it's your choice. Both are fine choices.

Playing a swordmage is probably just fine. I wouldn't worry about having a controller too much since they're probably the least important role and the warlock is pretty controllish too.

Go with Swordmage -> Coronal Guard.

If you're still stuck, do this:

Pick a Race you REALLY like, then pick a class that mechanically makes sense for that race.

---

Race tends to be a much stickier subject than class, so I find picking the race first lets you narrow down your choices.

i.e. If you're a Legolas fan, then play an Elven Fighter.

Did you really like the Fey in the second Hellboy movie? Play an Eladrin Swordmage.

Really dig the Tieflings in this new edition? Try a Tiefling Charisma Paladin.

Just a thought.

Human paladins get +2 to all NADs (non-AC defenses). And the extra feat is nice for superior weapon proficiency.

I'd go fighter, maybe battlerager if you are using Martial Power, but wear scale. The pure stickiness will work wonders for your striker group. And the figher powers just have great names. :D

pick one at random, and then play it and have fun. If it dies, pick a different one.

In the end, it doesn't matter what you play if you got a good DM all characters will be challenged equally.

Best of luck, welcome to the life.

Because this is almost the exact makeup of my party (mine has a wizard, though), I can definitely say that a Defender is the way to go. Both Fighter and Swordmage are good choices, but if you have Martial Power then the Fighter is going to have more options, and is probably going to be somewhat more powerful. You'd probably want to stick with a core Great Weapon or Guardian fighter rather than the Martial Power builds, which are more offense-focused. Martial power does have a number of options for the core builds.
