What do you do when your DM kills your character?

This article isn't about whether its wrong or not for a DM to kill your character, but rather what happens after a DM does inevitable kill your awesome character.

Long Story
So in my situation during our last session I used the wand of wander in the first round of combat. So far the wand has treated me pretty fairly and done pretty awesome. However, since I've upgraded my wand to a greater wand of wander it can have some devastating good and bad effects (homebrew campaign 10 charges daily and doesn't need to use a daily power). So I used it and it cast a gate spell to the shadow plane and sucked me in. After some interesting chat with the shadow plane i used the wand again and was gated to another plane. Then after using the remaining charges I was gated to the infernal plane.

So at this point my back story would probably make the article more understandable. In our last session, before I was killed, we infiltrated a castle and the wand teleported me outside the castle. Once I ran back in and battled in an encounter and summoned a Baylor (spelling?) to finish off all the minions, it teleported me to the bad side of town (far away from the combat). So I use my wand of wonder charges up on random town people and used my daily power to use me second wand to summon a red necromancer dragon (with minions) to destroy that part of town and provide a distraction for my team mates to escape the castle. So death and destruction was all over the place and I use one of my final wand of wonder charges on the orphanage. The DM uses his wand of wonder generator on the computer and laughs hysterically.I actually happened to summon a 24hr force cage on the orphanage. Of course much laughter was had and the evil characters in the party were not amused.

So I was summoned in front of the Baylor (in an office on top of his desk) who had previously told me that he awaited my arrival 2 sessions ago. We were talking politely when I asked how to get back to my plane... Suddenly he said that the return policy was my soul and life. We rolled initiative and he went first and outright slayed me with my corpse falling back to the material plane crispy. Then the DM went back to what the rest of the party was doing for an hour and a half. Each time he asked what the other party members were doing he would pass by me and say "dead."

So after the hour and a half near the end of the DND session he went back to my dilemma. The Baylor still possessed my soul and ordered his minions to begin strapping me to a torture rack over a fire for eternity. *Then the was a knock on the door* The Baylor turned and was lock wtf . So the door opens and an angel pops through and says, "You can't torture him." The Baylor said, "Why not?! He killed a ton of people, he obviously belongs here!" The angel agreed with him but reluctantly said, "This might be true, but he saved an orphanage! So as long as he's sorry he can return to the material plane with his body" :angelhide They argued back and forth for a little, but the he saved an orphanage card triumphed!

Short Story
So I returned to the material plane with my soul and a crispy burned body unconscious. My question is how long have you had for the DM to address your question or think that your character was dead?

If it's possible to get raised/resurrected, I bemoan my character got killed and keep playing.

If it's not possible to get raised/resurrected, I mourn my character then play another one.

If the DM purposely killed my character, I curse out the DM and never play with him again.

If another player purposely killed my character, presuming it's a normal game as opposed to one where everyone is evil and/or other silliness where such a happenstance is expected, I curse out the player and the DM's response to the matter determines whether I continue playing. I will never trust the player again, though. I won't be playing continuous vendetta against him, but our future characters will never be buddies.

My first character death I wasn't able to make the session that night, so I just made a duplicate character with feats mixed around.

Yep, I'm lame >.>

To be fair that's kind of a ***** death anyway, unless you were previously informed of this. Personally, when I'm not there my character just sits in the back. Whittlin'.

If i die I view it as my fault. If i was not able to keep myself alive(IE withdraw when i am in trouble) i have failed. I find that it is a mental challenge against my DM when he is being evil. And if i die I pull out a new character ( I have about 6 on-hand) it is always fun to change to a new class, and this makes me do it sooner.

I wait around to see if the party thinks res-ing my character is worthwhile, or what their characters IC would do. They take into account cost, my characters wishes, and closeness to my old character. Then if my character is res-ed I play from there. If not I begin working on a new one, who I think would fit with the game.

Basically, I would not have kept you waiting.

When I lose a PC, I roll a new one.

Larp out the funeral, when you factor in how much a funeral costs it really sucks...one spiteful dm made me lose my savings

The awkward part comes when the character gets raised...gotta go and dig up the casket just to get the character sheet and mini back, fortunately you can meet the friendliest of necrophiliacs if you go at the right hour.

In all seriousness, I just kill something the dm loves, then we're even.

If it was a good death, I'm a good sport about it, provided that the other characters roleplay correct reactions. Kinda irritates me when my character dies fighting monsters alongside them, and they just go "Huh. I call dibs on his armor!"

If it was a terrible/illogical death, I don't stop until a reasonable explanation or reasonable alternative to death has been given.

And usually, to be funny, my new character will have some sort of knowledge of the old character, and go on and on about what a great guy he was in-game to irritate the others.

when my characters die, they shed the moral coil and i roll a new one.

i get irritated if i die by something stupid, like a simple hit from orc soldier #54f42, but i accept it as is and roll up a new character.

it allows me opportunities to try new things, so with each end is a new beginning, yadda yadda yadda.

This typo has such beautiful possibilities.

I've had GM's spare my characters from certain death, only because i did something incredibly stupid (see also heroic). One of those jump infront of the arrow moments.

Under 3.5 some sort of undead with a paralyzing touch. I'm playing a monk (at lvl 2 so i basically suck) & i'm one of two characters who can see the paralyzed group member being rend limb from limb & i run in. The fighter (the other character who can see it does not). I hold the creature at bay (while taking to much damage), the other pc gets his second save makes it & runs away leaving me paralyzed & being savaged by the undead.

GM decided to spare my character because of my obviously heroic actions. The point to this story is, i wish he hadn't. If i had died i could have created something that actually worked without mini-maxing (which in my opinions, monks didn't).

The moral of this story (not making the moral coil joke) is sometime death is a great way to revitalize the game. Make a new character and move on. Just remember if you are responsible for my death I'm going to get you. ;)
