#1 Revenant07 Aug 10, 2008 17:27:44	I was creating a new character and wanted to purchase equipment, especially Starweave armor. The price says special. I'm guessing that means I can't buy it unless the DM says its ok and sets a price for it?

You may notice the "minimum enhancement bonus" entry on the table... that is the plus value that a suit of armor must have to be that particular type. You can't buy it unless you are allowed to purchase that level of magic item.

Also, then all the PHB says about Min Enhance Bonus is: "Masterwork armor requires a minimum enhancement bonus, as shown in this entry." So, is starweave armor supposed to be masterwork armor? Wow, PHB is not written very well.
#4 AaronOfBarbaria Aug 10, 2008 18:32:58	The cost for any "2nd tier armor" (the ones with a minimum enhancement of +4) depends on what type of magic armor it happens to be, but at minimum (being just plain +4 magic armor) it has a price of 49,500 - 63,000 gold due to the 10% - 40% mark up that merchants would ask for. Any "3rd tier armor" (the ones with a minimum enhancement of +6) have a price range of 1,237,500 - 1,575,000 gold if you are aiming at just the plain +6 magic version. It is most likely that you would find these armors as treasure.

Wow, PHB is not written very well. Actually, the information is clearly presented in the text on page 212, vis The cost of masterwork armor is included in the cost of magic armor. First full paragraph in the second column. The table on p214 simply refers back to what the authors assumed you would have read two pages before. Don't feel badly, though. I did exactly the same thing. It's a pretty big departure from the 3.5 item tiers. It took a bit of discussion on another message board for me to realize that in 4E there is not discreet "masterwork" category. It's built into the magic armor system. When creating a new character, you'll need to be starting at a minimum of Level 15 to even start to be concerned with masterwork armor types. If you are starting that high, any +4 or +5 armor you select at character creation will be of the appropriate masterwork category. Remember to use the updated base AC bonus listed on the table.

Doesn't that give you an armor bonus of +6? Not +2 like it says on page 212? I'm really confused.... The Bloodthread could be Starweave, if it is enchanted to +6. The total armor bonus is +8 (+2 because it is Starweave and +6 because it is +6). If you only had +4 or +5 Bloodthread then it would be Feyweave for a total armor bonus of +5 or +6 respectively. If you have +1, +2, or +3 Bloodthread, then it is Cloth for a total armor bonus of +1 to +3, respectively.
