| #1rangikuJul 01, 2009 18:48:50 | I am a medusa rogue that started my career as a shadar kai rogue. I was a stupid ass and got killed in a really funky trap, (had to give the dm mad props for that trap). Our group went and took my decaying body back to our employer who had a wicked staff made of bone, and it had a demon skull ingraved at the top They then called forth my spirit and i was given the option of reincarnation or my spirit put in another body. I took reincarnation i was then reincarnated as a medusa rogue which i thought was sweet but the down side to the reincarnation is that her staff is my skeletal system. What am i to do? Oh also we have a little demon following us, if you give him a blood sacrifice he gives you a wish,I have made some stupid mistakes with him as well. if i can get any help and or advise for these little sets of delemas that would be awsome.I would like to use the demon to our advantage and or make a wish to trick him into working for our employer. but with all my blunders as a rogue i am more like comic relief in my opinion, i am looking for fellow rogues to give me advise on playing my pc and help with my delemas. I would like advise on what to do about the skeletal problem, the demon issue and how we can use him and or banaish him, and just all out advise on how to play a rogue, weather to go as a sniper type rogue and use range or stay as a backstabber type rogue and be in the fight.(sorry for the misspelling) |

| #5gregt_314Jul 01, 2009 19:52:19 | Look all i am asking for is assistance if you got an issue please keep all comments to yourself but if you have usefull and helpfull information please help No, look, what I'm saying is you're asking us here on the forums to spend our time and energy to help you out of your problem. You're, in essence, asking for a favour. The least you can do is take the time to check the spelling and grammar in your post and format it in a way that doesn't make our eyes bleed. It doesn't need to be publication-perfect but it does need to be vaguely readable. I like offering advice - in fact, it's hard to stop me - but before I can do that I need to know what the hell you're talking about, and when you just put up a wall of text where you have to read halfway through before you even find the question it's just more trouble than it's worth. |

| #7gregt_314Jul 01, 2009 20:19:12 | I hope this is alittle better? A little. Points for effort - it's readable now. Okay, so you've got this little demon that gives you wishes. A wish is a pretty powerful thing. What's the problem with just wishing your troubles away? Also, why would you want to banish him? Also, I'm not clear on what the problem is with the staff. Okay, I get your skeletal system is now made out of the staff, but what's the issue? Does the guy want his staff back? Is he able to control you somehow? Lastly, what edition are you playing? I'm assuming 3.5, judging by the crazy stuff going on? |
| #8rangikuJul 01, 2009 21:02:23 | Ok we are running a homebrew 4e campaign. we have me as a medusa rouge, an albino drow ranger/ vamp, a slutty tiefling warlock who is begining to embrace her demonic side, a human fighter who is a cannibal and last but not least a shadar kai avanger who walks between the plains of the living and the dead. Now we will start with the first question the skeletal spine staff ,no there is no controll as of yet but i and my friends who are also in the campaign feel that she could be using it to watch what is going on or that if i **** her off she can just snap her fingers and i will die when her staff reapears back into her hands. Now for the demon he is a little bastard who will grant your wish for a blood sacrifice but your wishes have to be worded perfectly. if you don't speak specificly your wish he will grant it as he sees fit. I have made a few screw ups with him as well (damn my dm is good). My whole group knows of him and we are all trying to make some type of logical use of him without a wish backfiring on us.so thats 2 delemas i am looking for player imput on. Now for my last thing the whole rogue thing some ppl tell me to go as a sniper rogue and just to snipe from the shadows others think i should be the backstabber and just deal damage.so this is the delema i am wanting help with from any and all rogue players out there. |
| #9gregt_314Jul 01, 2009 21:08:55 | Ok we are running a homebrew 4e campaign. we have me as a medusa rouge, an albino drow ranger/ vamp, a slutty tiefling warlock who is begining to embrace her demonic side, a human fighter who is a cannibal and last but not least a shadar kai avanger who walks between the plains of the living and the dead. Your DM's version of 4E is sufficiently far from the actual game I don't think I can give you useful advice on playing a rogue. 4E, for example, doesn't have PC vampires, and I don't recall seeing legal rules for PC medusas. The problem with heavily homebrewed games is that the standard advice simply isn't useful. Re: wishes. "I wish you'd describe in detail and good faith the way you're going to implement my wishes to me before you do it, confirm that's what I want, and abort the wish if I say no." It's the "I wish you weren't a jerk" wish. A simpler version is, "I wish you'd act in good faith when implementing my wishes." Re: getting the staff out of you. Get someone to kill you, cut the spine out of your body, and then Raise Dead on the spineless remains. That's a pretty cheesy solution, though, and if your DM's half decent he probably has some plotline in mind to resolve the issue in a less metagamey way. |
| #10rangikuJul 01, 2009 21:15:25 | Well isn't the object of the game to have fun in a fantasy world where we as the players run the adventure and our dm tries to get us killed at every turn. We can still follow the rules of 4e with homebrewed pc's and a campaign setting that is homebrewed as well |
| #11Mad_JackJul 01, 2009 21:19:26 | Re: getting the staff out of you. Get someone to kill you, cut the spine out of your body, and then Raise Dead on the spineless remains. That's a pretty cheesy solution, though, and if your DM's half decent he probably has some plotline in mind to resolve the issue in a less metagamey way. Yeah, I'd have to agree. Either your DM is just pulling this stuff out of his butt as he goes along (possible with all the wackiness going on in your game), or he has a definite reason for turning you into a walking plot device. I'd say that as long as nothing bad is happening (yet.), you should probably just go along with it to see where he's going with it. As for the little wish-demon, smart advice says... Stop making wishes unless it's incredibly life-or-death important. You'll live longer. :D |
| #12gregt_314Jul 01, 2009 21:46:18 | Well isn't the object of the game to have fun in a fantasy world where we as the players run the adventure and our dm tries to get us killed at every turn. Some people run that way; while the game envisages this possibly it's certainly not the intended way of using D&D. I don't advocate it for anything other than a single session, simply because the DM's power to get you killed is infinite and if he's genuinely trying it'll be a short and uninteresting game. Outside of competitive dungeon delves, even the most sandbox-prone players will concede that the DM needs to provide goals and structure for you and will typically not inflict any sort of permanent condition on you without having a vague idea of one possible way for you to escape it. Doesn't mean you shouldn't play that way if you're all having fun. Having fun's the most important thing. I'm just saying you've broken the curve, and this kind of play is less likely to produce sustained fun than the more structured play envisaged by the rulebooks. |
| #13rangikuJul 01, 2009 22:09:04 | I see your point but my dm does have long term plans for our campaign we dont intend on dieing any time soon, well i died once already lol in a rather funny way even i was laughing after that, the best part of the whole thing the ranger tried to search my corpse for 450 gold i had form a pick pocket move i did earlier in the session from an npc the cube dissolved it all as it killed me. I and my team if you will we are mercs we work for the highest paying person who offeres us work and yes there are all types of plot twist but that the fun part imo. |
| #14Azuridin_the_agedJul 01, 2009 22:29:24 | I'm sorry i don't recall anywhere in the Dungeoun masters guide an outline on how your players are supposed to play or where they are supposed to go. I don't recall a "you have to play this way or you cannot play DnD" clause, nor do i recount a video/statement put out by any creator saying that DnD must be played a specific and certain way or else your just wasting time. However what i do recall is several points in the book explaining that the rules that have been published are more guidelines then definates and if the players or DM (Yes i am this all crazy out of the world, and as some of you have placed, inaccurate DM) want to change, homebrew, or tweak somethings then that is perfectly accurate. In fact i do remember 1 rule that is published in every single roleplaying game i have ever ran or played and that is the basic golden rule of roleplaying. "Pick a target number and have your players roll" Yes there is no specified rules for medusa in the books, and yes there is no specified rules for some of the things i have concocted and put into my campaign but you know what. Im creative enough to make it work. I still have the ability to have an imagination and work through things at the spur of the momment. Now im sure theres plenty of dms that can only follow by the rules that have published and put out and thats fine for whoever is playing in their campaigns. But for anyone to come here and judge my, and my players, game without actually playing in it because the only arguement they can pull out of their pathetic excuses for an imagination is the rules arnt in a book. then i for one feel incredibly sorry for you all. If you don't have the imagination, the creativity, or the love for the game then you, by my opinion, have lost the true meaning of the game and what it was created for. So badger and attack my player all you want. Belittle and tempt to hurt my feelings as much as you want but the simple fact of the matter is that me and my players have fun when we play DND. They enjoy the plot twists and turns i throw at them and all of us have had and experienced those momments of confusion and excitement by being thrown a curve ball. Perhaps if any of you tempted to actually look into something, or try to work what little creative aspects of your brains you had left. Instead of following word for word every single sourcebook. Then youd appreciatte where things are going and the possibilities that have arissen. Even if you had an inkling of intelligence you would of simply answered the question instead of attacking him, me, or our game. Point to fact, if you dont have anything constructive or useful then do us all a favor and hit the back button and find another post you can be useful in. Unfortunatly i doubt many of you have the mental prowess to come to that conclusion. good day |
| #15rangikuJul 01, 2009 22:37:17 | YOU GO DM MAN....ERR GOD |
| #16entropy_judgeJul 01, 2009 23:14:14 | Who are you? Anyway.I'm sorry i don't recall anywhere in the Dungeoun masters guide an outline on how your players are supposed to play or where they are supposed to go. An arcane function known as a "storyline." RE: rest of your paragraph: there is a 'typical' way of playing D&D, and the vast majority of DM's that 'play' D&D the way the OP's DM do tend to have *****y games that lose players. When changed enough from the actual setting (as the OP's game seems to have been), you stop playing 'D&D' and start playing 'RPG that is sorta like D&D.' Yes, it's a 'guideline' that DMs not try to kill their players every session - it's also a 'guideline' that Fighters get d10 HP, and weapons do their specified amounts of damage instead of d100. In fact i do remember 1 rule that is published in every single roleplaying game i have ever ran or played and that is the basic golden rule of roleplaying. "Pick a target number and have your players roll" Stupid 'golden rule.' The REAL "Golden Rule" is "Everyone has fun." Yes there is no specified rules for medusa in the books, and yes there is no specified rules for some of the things i have concocted and put into my campaign but you know what. Im creative enough to make it work. I still have the ability to have an imagination and work through things at the spur of the momment. And guess what? WE DON'T KNOW THOSE RULES. We don't have the breakdown for the OP's homebrewed creations either, so if we say "Hey, use Light Weapons because Rogues get bonuses from them," and he turns around and says "No they don't, our game is different," no one here can help him. I mean, if creativity is all that's required, hey, why not just have an interactive story-telling session? Now im sure theres plenty of dms that can only follow by the rules that have published and put out and thats fine for whoever is playing in their campaigns. But for anyone to come here and judge my, and my players, game without actually playing in it because the only arguement they can pull out of their pathetic excuses for an imagination is the rules arnt in a book. then i for one feel incredibly sorry for you all. When said players are asking for advice on things that aren't in the book and don't tell us what's changed, then our advice isn't worth a damn. Hey, how about this? I have a game that's played sort of like AD&D - only my character is a half-goblin, and I don't have enough d13's to make all the attack rolls in one go, and the DM's rule is that only dice on the table count. How can I keep the Giant/Dragon hybrids from killing me? If you don't have the imagination, the creativity, or the love for the game then you, by my opinion, have lost the true meaning of the game and what it was created for. And if you have the imagination and creativity to change the game enough and haven't tried to sell your own gaming product, you're a pathetic example of a human being. Hey, I can be insulting too! Also, ROFLS all over the place for starting out saying "there's no set way to play D&D" and then pulling "if you're not playing my way you're doing it wrong" out. Priceless, truly. So badger and attack my player all you want. Belittle and tempt to hurt my feelings as much as you want but the simple fact of the matter is that me and my players have fun when we play DND. Perhaps, but that doesn't help the OP with his DM. They enjoy the plot twists and turns i throw at them and all of us have had and experienced those momments of confusion and excitement by being thrown a curve ball. And the OP wants advice with how to deal with some problems, namely: 1) His DM gave him a reincarnated body that has the ability to insta-gib him whenever said DM feels like it; 2) His DM gave them a Wish-machine, but is of the "jerk-Lawyer-wish" variety - IE, if there is any possible way to twist the wish, the DM will take it. In addition to the problems that exist if the OP does use the wishes, that line of thought tends to have bad DMs behind it. 3) He wants advice on how best to take his character (a Medusa Rogue), when: A) Medusa's are not a standard playable race, and we don't have his statblock and associated abilities, making this pointless; B) There is also another nonstandard PC (vampire), and without further clarification on the extent of the changes made to the campaign, any 'standard advice' is pointless (as was already pointed out). Perhaps if any of you tempted to actually look into something, or try to work what little creative aspects of your brains you had left. More pointless insulting from Random Jack #73. Instead of following word for word every single sourcebook. See above questions regarding my half-Goblin, then get back to me. Then youd appreciatte where things are going and the possibilities that have arissen. Even if you had an inkling of intelligence you would of simply answered the question instead of attacking him, me, or our game. Uh-huh. We know NOTHING ABOUT THE GAME. AT ALL. EXCEPT THAT IT'S A HEAVILY MODIFIED VERSION OF 4E. ... Oh, hey, do you guys know each other? I suppose I should go back and change all those wonderings about who the **** you were, just sort of butting in and talking smack about everyone, but I'll just wait for you to read down here and figure out how stupid I think you are. Point to fact, if you dont have anything constructive or useful then do us all a favor and hit the back button and find another post you can be useful in. Why do you think most people haven't even *bothered* to post here? Most people won't be bothered to even try to help, with such a screwy system as is apparently in existence in the game. Unfortunatly i doubt many of you have the mental prowess to come to that conclusion. More random insulting; also, see immediately prior point about the lack of posts. good day It's night. |
| #17gregt_314Jul 01, 2009 23:18:00 | I'm sorry i don't recall anywhere in the Dungeoun masters guide an outline on how your players are supposed to play or where they are supposed to go. I don't recall a "you have to play this way or you cannot play DnD" clause, nor do i recount a video/statement put out by any creator saying that DnD must be played a specific and certain way or else your just wasting time. Oh, wow, I think this was directed at me. Dude, read the thread. The guy asked described a game where, and I quote, "we as the players run the adventure and our dm tries to get us killed at every turn." And, as I pointed out, the DM's ability to kill players is infinite; that's a pretty short game. Minute one, rocks fall, everyone dies. Clearly Rangiku didn't mean that literally (as he goes on to explain). What he's talking about is a more competitive game. Competitive D&D is explicitly addressed in Dungeon Delve (among other places). I don't have Dungeon Delve with me, but it describes competitive play as, paraphrasing as I can't access the quote, "a fun alternative to the normal way to play D&D" and goes on to say it's "significantly shallower than the way D&D was designed to be played" and says you're "missing out on a lot of what makes the D&D experience so memorable". Which is pretty much exactly what I was saying. D&D isn't designed to be played this way, you should be aware of that fact if you're in a competitive game, but you can regardless have fun and ultimately that's all that matters. Next time, Azuridin, come at me when I'm actually saying something contentious. I promise to give you plenty of chances. |
| #18rangikuJul 01, 2009 23:46:24 | Ok this is my fault i can see that ppl don't use their imagination well. all i was asking for was fellow players to give some incite as to what they woud do in my place, not to be condemed but i can see no one wants to help except my dm, but all you do is just put others down to make yourself feel better. |
| #19Azuridin_the_agedJul 01, 2009 23:50:20 | ~~~Who are you? Anyway. I am Rengiku's DM ~~~An arcane function known as a "storyline." Im sorry but my game does have a storyline, if youd like id gladly send it to you privatley, but i doubt you want to go that far. ~~~RE: rest of your paragraph: there is a 'typical' way of playing D&D, and the vast majority of DM's that 'play' D&D the way the OP's DM do tend to have *****y games that lose players. No, there is guidelines set out by the sourcebooks on how to create an adventure and campaign. Now as far as my game being so called *****y and losing players. I can proudly say that all of my players enjoy and love my campaign up to this date. We have been playing for a good 6 months now on this one alone and in all my time Dming, its been over about 5 years now, i have never once lost a player because of my storytelling or anything other than a real life issue. ~~~When changed enough from the actual setting (as the OP's game seems to have been), you stop playing 'D&D' and start playing 'RPG that is sorta like D&D.' Yes, it's a 'guideline' that DMs not try to kill their players every session - it's also a 'guideline' that Fighters get d10 HP, and weapons do their specified amounts of damage instead of d100. Im sorry but if your playing by the basic setup of DnD then no matter where it is set, when it is set, or how it is played it is still DnD. Regardless to the fact a game modified from the set basic rules of DnD can still be fun an interesting and still follow to basic rules set out. When you play monopoly do you put money in the center for the cards or getting out of jail and whoever lands on free parking gets it? thats not part of the rules and therefore no longer monopoly. Do you whine and cry when this rule is instated or utlised? ~~~Stupid 'golden rule.' The REAL "Golden Rule" is "Everyone has fun." Which me and my players are having fun. So this comment in my opinion has no merit nor need. Just a pathetic attempt at trying to seem intelligent and having a point when none is needed. ~~~And guess what? WE DON'T KNOW THOSE RULES. We don't have the breakdown for the OP's homebrewed creations either, so if we say "Hey, use Light Weapons because Rogues get bonuses from them," and he turns around and says "No they don't, our game is different," no one here can help him. I mean, if creativity is all that's required, hey, why not just have an interactive story-telling session? Well guess what. A rogue no matter what will follow by a few basic guideline. I know ill list some. 1: You should be tempting to hide to the shadows so as to give yourself a more advantageous position while the melee are held up by the other in the fray attackers. 2: When you play a rogue think of thief. You should be the unseen wild card in every encounter. When you surprise someone you have a greater advantage than running and charging head on. 3: Steal, Steal, Steal. Its always funny when the main magic user, or fighter goes to grab their potions of healing or secondary weapon and its not there. Oh hey see what i did there. Put out useful ideas and thoughts without trying to belittle or attack someone. Hey that was civil. And i didn't even need to know every little and tiny aspect of how things run. ~~~When said players are asking for advice on things that aren't in the book and don't tell us what's changed, then our advice isn't worth a damn. Hey, how about this? I have a game that's played sort of like AD&D - only my character is a half-goblin, and I don't have enough d13's to make all the attack rolls in one go, and the DM's rule is that only dice on the table count. How can I keep the Giant/Dragon hybrids from killing me? Now your attempting to pull off the wall ideas out to attempt to make yourself feel better or drive home a point that isnt substantially thought out. Yes there are some people that might go this far, but point to fact. The basics no matter what are still basics that can be added to. To the matter of his questioning. He wasnt asking about what weapon to use, or what skills to take but instead other people OPINIONS on how a basic rogue should work to not be comic relief. Unfortunatly inbred and Mentally useless individuals post things attacking his grammar, punctuation, and simply his writing. In the mean time using run on sentences and horrible punctuation themselves. ~~~And if you have the imagination and creativity to change the game enough and haven't tried to sell your own gaming product, you're a pathetic example of a human being. Hey, I can be insulting too! I'm sorry i never had the intention of trying to put out a gaming product or anything of the sort. Im rather happy with my current job, and side jobs to not need to do such. However when i do feel the need or want to ill be sure to personally send you an autographed copy deal? ~~~Also, ROFLS all over the place for starting out saying "there's no set way to play D&D" and then pulling "if you're not playing my way you're doing it wrong" out. Priceless, truly. I never once said anyone had to play my way when playing DnD. Perhaps if you actually read what was posted you'd understand things better. but hey its ok, I forgive you. ~~~Perhaps, but that doesn't help the OP with his DM. Again, i am the OP's DM and if anyone really wanted to help him with his questions then half of these posts wouldnt of even gotten posted. But again your attempting to attack me and not defend your point. ~~~And the OP wants advice with how to deal with some problems, namely: ~~1) His DM gave him a reincarnated body that has the ability to insta-gib him whenever said DM feels like it; He asked for how to get rid of the drawback because he hasnt come up with a conclusion hismelf. Besides if i wanted to insta-gib him with it it would of happened by now. ~~~2) His DM gave them a Wish-machine, but is of the "jerk-Lawyer-wish" variety - IE, if there is any possible way to twist the wish, the DM will take it. In addition to the problems that exist if the OP does use the wishes, that line of thought tends to have bad DMs behind it. First off the creature has only ever granted 1 Wish. He is a plot device set into the game to give them half false half true information. Ill give you the fact you werent fully informed of that. So there is one good point you do make. ~~~3) He wants advice on how best to take his character (a Medusa Rogue), when: A) Medusa's are not a standard playable race, and we don't have his statblock and associated abilities, making this pointless; B) There is also another nonstandard PC (vampire), and without further clarification on the extent of the changes made to the campaign, any 'standard advice' is pointless (as was already pointed out). Again. rogue is a Rogue. They don't operate far from the basics in eberron, Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft, or anyother form of DnD. So the basic points set out would of been helpful. Heck any point other then the constant beration of his spelling and grammar would of been helpful. ~~~See above questions regarding my half-Goblin, then get back to me. See above posts about homebrewed campaigns not being in sourcebooks from other posters then make a legitimate intelligent post. ~~~Uh-huh. We know NOTHING ABOUT THE GAME. AT ALL. EXCEPT THAT IT'S A HEAVILY MODIFIED VERSION OF 4E. ... Oh, hey, do you guys know each other? I suppose I should go back and change all those wonderings about who the **** you were, just sort of butting in and talking smack about everyone, but I'll just wait for you to read down here and figure out how stupid I think you are. again i am THE DM of his campaign. so of course im going to post when you guys activly attack my player and friend. Id expect nothing less from anyone else. ~~~Why do you think most people haven't even *bothered* to post here? Most people won't be bothered to even try to help, with such a screwy system as is apparently in existence in the game. And for the people that havn't even bothered to post i have much respect for them. Because i know they at least had the common decency and intelligence to know they had nothing to add or be helpful with and moved on. ~~~It's night. Actually its Day somewhere. And if you want to get into semantics. Time of day and status of what it is is nothing more then what is perceived. Perhaps i perceive day as night and night as day. Just as i perceive your a random troll attempting to get a rise out of people and fail miserablly. But don't feel bad. Try enough and long enough and im sure youll get to be halfway decent at it. |
| #20entropy_judgeJul 01, 2009 23:52:16 | IF it's your fault, it's only in bringing it up without explaining everything. The situations you are in are ones that, from board experience, lead to problem DMs, and the general advice for those is "get out." Imagination, your DM's opinion on ours notwithstanding, has nothing to do with ANYTHING. Why? Because I *imagine* that your Medusa would be quite effective as a BS Rogue - get close, get Combat Advantage, grapple, and petrify. I *imagine* that having a head-ful of venomous snakes for hair would lead to pretty effective grapples. I *imagine* that simply not using the wish-machine, or destroying it, would be preferable to using it in a context where the wishes are nearly guaranteed to be twisted. I *imagine* that any employer evil enough to use a magical staff as a spine for a *REINCARNATED* minion is evil enough to not care about that particular minion. |
| #21Azuridin_the_agedJul 01, 2009 23:55:35 | ~~~Oh, wow, I think this was directed at me. Dude, read the thread. The guy asked described a game where, and I quote, "we as the players run the adventure and our dm tries to get us killed at every turn." Actually you should reread what he posted. What he posted was a question regarding how to better play is rogue. The post your referring to is a generalisation he made. And i quote Well isn't the object of the game to have fun in a fantasy world where we as the players run the adventure and our dm tries to get us killed at every turn. We can still follow the rules of 4e with homebrewed pc's and a campaign setting that is homebrewed as well So try again. ~~~And, as I pointed out, the DM's ability to kill players is infinite; that's a pretty short game. Minute one, rocks fall, everyone dies. Clearly Rangiku didn't mean that literally (as he goes on to explain). What he's talking about is a more competitive game. The game i setup for them is not a competative game. However my players are competative players. I draw off of this as do they which brings up excellant and fun side plots and twists. Point to fact, not all groups get along well. Look for instance to babylon 5 The centauri and Narn dont work well together, but they work together when it is most beneficial for them both. ~~~Next time, Azuridin, come at when I'm actually saying something contentious. I promise to give you plenty of chances. First off. I was not directing directly at you, but all of the posters who have nothing to put up but downings and rantings about how horrible his writing is. Or how not following directly to the rules is the proper way to play. If you felt that my post was a direct attack at you, then that was your interpretation of it. Which you are definatly entitled to. |
| #22Azuridin_the_agedJul 01, 2009 23:59:08 | IF it's your fault, it's only in bringing it up without explaining everything. And all of these points setup like such at the begining would of been more helpful and avoided the threads that have been posted as to what was originially put out. albeit attempting to sarcastically make a point, it is still far more helpful then anything up thus far. You can IMAGINE what would help and formulate basics. You can IMAGINE the way a rogue plays in my campaign is still semi close to the way it plays in others. And you can then henceforth IMAGINE ways to be constructive and useful. But unfortunatly too many people try to make themselves look cool on a message board that hardly anyone really cares about anyone else. This is what causes problems. |
| #23gregt_314Jul 02, 2009 0:35:20 | First off. *cough* Those guys were ALL me, with the exception of Cincinnatus, so it's hard to see it as aimed at anyone else, and again, if you'll read, you'll see I was expressing a genuine desire to help and asking him to meet me halfway by making his text more readable. He did, and I responded with constructive advice. And look, effectively what you've done is come out of nowhere and blast us for taking what Rangiku's said at face value and not magically looking past it to discern reality. I think probably what you were intending to do was come here and help Rangiku out by providing some more background, but the way you've actually expressed yourself is to shoot from the hip without reading the preceding posts and slam everyone who's attempted to help Rangiku out. People can't give mechanical advice to someone about their homebrew game, and you've just demonstrated that. You suggest a rogue should "strike from the shadows"; a quick glance at the 4E stealth errata suggests that's almost impossible for most rogue builds. You suggest a rogue should "steal, steal, steal"; putting aside the fact that thieves have been renamed rogues specifically to avoid this assumption, it's something that a great many DMs (and players) look down on as disruptive and while it's fine that your game works that way it's hardly universal advice. And to Rangiku - sorry your thread kind of got derailed here, but as I said before clearly you're having an absolute blast with your game, regardless of how kooky it may be, and thanks for taking the time to raise your question. Hope you keep having fun! |
| #24rangikuJul 02, 2009 2:21:11 | again this is my fault i should have never asked for any assistance on this matter. Sometime i start rambleing on when typing and forget the basics so i do apoligize. As for my dm, he is a good man and sticks up for his friends and players but if ppl are offended they are just offended then, i can only apoligize for my own actions. Now i came here for advise on my delemas with the spine the demon and just other rogue things. i did not want all this to come from a poorly writen post. So with all that said how would you handle my delemas? and lets all stop the bickering with each other and help eachother, with that said thank you |
| #25entropy_judgeJul 02, 2009 2:39:43 | Now i came here for advise on my delemas with the spine the demon and just other rogue things. Regarding the Rogue: What are your stats, what's your current build (if you have one), and do you have any preferences as to how you want your character played? Saying "I have a medusa Rogue, what should I do with it" isn't helpful because we don't know what it might be good at. Likewise, the stats for the medusa might be useful - if it has any special abilities that can be adapted to specific rogue techniques or anything that is antithetical to a particular rogue build. Similarly, how strong is your Petrifying Gaze, and can you attack with your snake-hair (and is it poisonous?)? Regarding the staff-spine: Well, the earlier suggestion about killing your character, removing the staff, and raising might work, if the spell fixes what's wrong with the body. Or, if you're willing to put forth the time and effort to come up with an 'uncorruptible' Wish, you might be able to use the demon. HOWEVER: Really, I don't see any way around leaving it stuck in you as leverage against your character until plot resolution pulls it out. The fact that the DM decided you needed an evil stick to replace your spine means he probably wants it there for plot reasons. Regarding the demon: Keep it, don't trust it (as half the info it gives you is false), if you can use it safely, do so, but never rely on it. It's your Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch - you never use it unless it's absolutely necessary, but if it is necessary, make sure you get it right. Counting to five is right out. |
| #26shinkirouJul 02, 2009 3:24:57 | To be honest, this seems so homebrew that you're pretty much going to have to come up with a solution yourself. For all intents and purposes you're working under a completely different gaming system, so I dont even know what you are and aren't capable of. The best advice I can give you is to do whatever the DM lets you get away with to accomplish what you're trying to do. |
| #27FlashbackJonJul 02, 2009 9:44:35 | again this is my fault i should have never asked for any assistance on this matter. Sometime i start rambleing on when typing and forget the basics so i do apoligize. Don't blame yourself, man. Here's how this thread went down. YOU: Can you guys help me? FORUM PPL: Make it so we can read it first. YOU: Okay. FORUM PPL: Well, we can't really help without knowing more about your setting... YOUR DM: WTF DON'T INSULT MY GAME MAGGOTS FORUM PPL: wut YOU: I'm sorry, this is my fault, I shouldn't have posted. From a complete third party perspective, the only person who stepped out of line was your DM. Aside from his posts, this thread has been mostly constructive and the posters have been mostly sympathetic to your issues. You were asked to make your posts clearer and you did. You were asked to expound on the setting and you did. Consider your job done. As for the spine thing, I'm not sure there's any way to do that without DM intervention as is. If he put it in there, he most likely put in a specialized way of getting it out, like a magic ritual or something. Consider finding some manner of ritual caster with goals opposed to your employer and start looking at ways to separate this staff and your spine or sever its connection to your employer. I have to agree with the other poster: your employer is probably just using you as a tool at this point and it's likely in your best interest to cut ties. Keep in mind the road might be long and difficult (and therefore, fun!) As a medusa, do you get Rogue-related bonuses? Something to perception I assume? How does your petrify work? |
| #28rangikuJul 02, 2009 14:05:18 | Ok yeah my gaze is a 5space burst i believe and it's an encounter power we are only lvl 5 so she has not advanced very far in her medusa ish skills as of yet. as far as my build i have a high dex rogue style build so i am thinking range and move in shadows so inother words i stick to shadows and do hit and runs on the casters imo. The spine thing i think i am going to talk to the dm about it to get an idea of what it does and if it gives me any specials. we do have a demon like wish monster following us at time and at times we can call it still looking for ways to deal with that. I am still looking for peaceful and friendly exchanges on the forums my last couple post have not recieved that but i am still new to this so i guess i have to deal with it lol. |
| #29ADHadhJul 02, 2009 16:27:46 | To the OP: You can somehow try to state to the little demon that you want a regular spine instead of this magicky staff in you in a way that does not kill you (though it is likely a plot device). While you're at it, you can make yourself Shadar-Kai again. If you insist on playing a Medusa, both ways of playing rogue are fine: you can go back-stabby and use your gaze as a ranged option, or you can go sniper and use your gaze to repel guys that get too close. Back on the demon thing: next time it screws up your wish, order it to screw itself. That'll teach him. I'm done. |
| #30erendorJul 02, 2009 19:44:06 | rangiku - the demon seems like a risky proposition. If you really want to make wishes, your best bet is to spend a good long while wording a wish in a way that excludes the possibility of backfiring (which is probably nigh impossible). If it answers questions about its ability honestly (which you can't be sure of), try asking "If I wish for 'Every wish I make to be granted only after you have given me a detailed explanation of everything that will occur when it is granted, and I have given my permission for it to go ahead', will your honour that wish?". Also, try something like "I wish for a +3 lifedrinker dagger only, created by and for this wish, delivered instantly to my location with no accompanying monsters, undamaged and in perfect condition, with no negative effects associated with its ownership, use, or presence, and appearing by my feet, not harming anyone on its arrival, and not causing any entity to have a negative reaction to its loss or to my ownership of it." Of course, if your DM is reading this thread, you'll probably find any suggested wish torn apart looking for loopholes and twisted before you even make it ;). |
| #31Azuridin_the_agedJul 03, 2009 0:00:24 | I'm not posting here to start or continue any arguments. First let me say a few things. I received a phone call last night, in a rather harsh mood at the time of day already, from the originial poster asking me to come to the forums and check out what was being posted on his thread. His exact words were he needed my help with a few things. Now i admit i took a few things most likley out of context and perhaps in the opinion they were abit harsher than were ever meant to be. I am by far not an evil or horrible person. Vindictive at times yes. A kettle pot ready to blow, sometimes yes. But i am humble enough to admit when i do something wrong or not in the most adept way possible. So i am apologising to those i may have upset or come off as a horrible, half demented, evil person. Such was not my intentions. Im not blaming anyone for the mood i came to the boards with, but when i get to that state of rage my fingers tend to fly faster then they should. Now secondly, in the interest of helping my player im going to give some background and how things are working so you all may see it in a different light. We are running 4.0 in the basic sense. Most of the classes run exactly how they are said to, a few have been altered slightly. THE ROGUE has not been altered. Aside from a houserulling where he may utilise Thrown weapons in place of the Hand Crossbow regulation, the rogue hasnt been touched. Now i tend to go a little off the board when things happen in combat. For one if i believe a character has done something rather interesting, or out of the ordinary i will allow them to roll a 1D6 call even or odd, then either make a second attack, roll additionial damage for the attack, or take another standard action. The houserules i have implement will be in this post followed up by his characters base stats and abilities and a third outlining the basis of the storyline and backgrounds. Please be patient. Action Points: ~i've modified these slightly. Players have 6 actions points now and will only ever have 6 action points across their whole career. These can be used in the following actions. 1: take another action during your turn 2: Negate the damage of an attack that has hit (note effects still happen from the attack the player just takes no damage) 3: Add 1D6 to whatever roll they have just made Vitality Points: ~A new ruling i have made. Every player starts with 1 Vitality point. They can use this but will never receive it back. They will, however, earn other vitality points by "doing the dramatically appropriatte thing at the Dramatically appropriatte time". Vitality points function as such. 1: Use a Vitality Point to roll 2D20 and utilise the highest number rolled. Note: A player may not use a Vitality point and Action point in the same round. These are basically the only differences in my campaign world at this time. Yes i have mechanics and the like but they utilise the stats of already crafted items. For instance Pistols work off of Hand Crossbow statistics. Rifles work off of light crossbow stats. airships work off of basic mount statistics just (hover, fly, levitate). However the party has not received any of the following. |
| #32Azuridin_the_agedJul 03, 2009 0:16:12 | Rengiku's Character Currently his character modifiers are as follows (the numbers do include half of his level just so you all know.) | #33Azuridin_the_agedJul 03, 2009 0:30:50 | now for a little background with a few of the situations. The Demonic Tinkle-winkle ~he is not a wish generating machine. I think Rengiku confused him with the BBeG they encountered last night that was created off of the idea of the Wishmaster Movies. Tinklewinkle is a demonic little creature that is utilising them for his own means. He has granted 1 wish, albeit was a small wish. Other than that hes done nothing but give them half truths stewed with falisifications. The Staff Spine ~Yes there is a way for him to remove this fault. Yes he has the possibility to getting it either removed or broken from her powers. However i will not outright tell him or any of them how it is done. I will drop clues and suggestions on things to aide them but ultimatley its up to them to figure out how it is supposed to break away from her powers. Lady Kamroth, their current employer ~Lady Kamroth worships the Chaotic Pantheon modeled after Warhammers 4 gods of Chaos. Mine are the following. 1: Slarvesh, the god of excess. Her followers revel in overboding everything possible. Pain, pleasure, Eroticism, Emotions, Anything you can possibly take the extreme. Lady Kamroth is the direct link to this god herself. She is gifted powers through her worship of Slarvesh and is currently planning an invasion of the players home country. they know if this, but unfortunatly she pays better then the good guys and have been helping her weaken the city to fully overthrow it. 2: Khaerne, The blood god A feral demonic beast that has been kept chained for over a millenia in the abyss. He is of one simple need and that is to kill. His followers range on the border of Barbariens and other crazed have psychotic worshippers. Khaerne is used as a last ditch effort by the chaotic pantheon to sow their seeds. 3: Nargle, The Grandfather of Death Yes his followers are necromancers of the purest ideals. with every dieing soul he raised another mindless minion to his cause. His purest of champions are the Hive Lords. Liches of immense power that experiement continiously on how to perfect a better undead. They have gone as far as to add mechanical components and fuse bodies with other species to achieve these goals. 4: Tzar'Naresh, The Lord of Magery Only the brightest and yet most insane follow Tzar'Naresh. he is the father of the other three chaotic gods and therefore their leader. An ancient and powerful god himself he has been forgotten for near to a million years and his powers have been waning. Now he is tempting to forge a new destiny for himself, his children, and their followers in the remaking of the World. Last session my players freed a horrificly powerful Demon Prince named Kosh (yes i steal my names and plot devices from alot of places but then again who doesn't). The warlock of the group did manage to Banish him from the Material plane forever. However Lady Kamroth still sees him as a giant threat and is sending the players into the Abyss to hunt him down and kill him. Now the players themselves are only level 5. They work very good together, and play off of each other superbly. I know the Abyss is set for a much higher level, but i will not be throwing level 10s or higher at them. Basically they will have to hunt down this big bad guy and destroy or rechain him. Somehow remove him from the picture. I hope i've given enough explanation for anyone to aide Rengiku in his questions. If you have any other questions go ahead and post em ill try to answer. |
