| #1fmalchemistApr 15, 2011 21:37:18 | my PC's have been tricked into gardening by a wizard and to keep the groups clutzy fighter out of the way, our sorceress has convinced him to try pulling up a small tree, what would be the DC to check to see if he succeeds |
| #2sallaApr 15, 2011 21:39:24 | I would just call it impossible. |
| #3rambaldiApr 15, 2011 23:13:17 | Love the story. Any idea of the type of tree? I would give it a very rough Strength Check DC of 30 (for a very low level 4e party) so that eventually after trying to convince some of rest of the party to help and a lot of effort it might be possible. |
| #4trebor_rjfApr 16, 2011 1:38:04 | 30 sounds right to me. |
| #5CaptainPicardApr 16, 2011 1:54:22 | It depends. Which would be funnier - him succeeding, or him failing? |
| #6ougApr 16, 2011 5:15:15 | You should make them pull their back out if they get lower than a 5. |
| #7eldrazorApr 16, 2011 6:02:54 | 30 seems about right. Epic tier fighters should be able to pull out a small tree. Heroic and paragon should not |
| #8buchatarApr 16, 2011 10:07:47 | With all due respect I think we all need to figure out what "exactly" he is trying to pull out of the ground. Is it: A - upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a... B - www.oaktreeshomelearning.co.uk/images/oa... |
| #9jetshieldApr 16, 2011 16:10:13 | The DC to uproot a tree, any tree, no matter how large or well rooted is [plot]. |
| #10fmalchemistApr 16, 2011 18:29:59 | It depends. thats why I'm asking |
| #11fmalchemistApr 16, 2011 18:32:58 | With all due respect I think we all need to figure out what "exactly" he is trying to pull out of the ground. more like C- www.cirrusimage.com/Spider/norway_maple_... |
| #12Mad_JackApr 17, 2011 2:51:10 | I'd say, given the image you linked to, if the tree's more than 25 feet tall or so he probably can't rip it up just through brute physical strength (at least not at his current level). But, if it's shorter than that, I guess I'd agree with the others about the DC for ripping it out of the ground... On the other hand, if anybody in the party has an axe the tree is toast - it's just a matter of how much time you want it to take him. |
| #13rambaldiApr 17, 2011 21:54:56 |
Or how much time you leave him trying to pull it out before you show him the axe? |
| #14BilopTheFleshwarperApr 19, 2011 0:17:06 | Unless he's as strong as a team of horses don't bother, or give him a slipped disk. |
| #15solikMay 03, 2011 4:26:30 | I absolutely love the title of this thread. One of the best ever. I got nothing useful to add though, sorry. |
| #16badocterMay 06, 2011 20:36:43 | It depends. Succeeding is definately funnier. After he succeeds, have the tree roll an attack vs his reflex to see if it falls on top of him. So now you need to know the DC to uproot the tree, the falling tree's attack bonus and damage dice, and the DC of someone else to roll the tree off of him if he is pinned. Please feel free to add to this scenario ![]() BTW, there is a perfectly good workaround to make any tree realistically fair game even at heroic tier -- termite infestation. In fainess you should let him do a nature check as he ponders the felling of the tree and reveal the infestation if he meets yet another DC you will need to set. |

Oh, and after he fells the tree, don't forget to account for what might live in the tree....how about a family of angry and now homeless grizzly squirrels...roll for init |
