What should I play?

I'm joining a group that recently lost a player (kicked out for showing up 2 hours late to EVERY game).

The group is a Dwarf Warrior who I am told is very sticky, an Elf Bow Ranger, and a Human Laser Cleric of Bahamut.

I'll be starting at 11th level. The group would like another melee character to be up with the Dwarf, and/or some sort of controller. I also notice a lack of Arcane in the group.

My first thought was to go with a Shadar-Kai Swordmage (the only melee arcane class) and make him as controllery as possible. If so should I go Assault or Ensnaring?

My other thoughts are to go with a Goliath Barbarian or Human Avenger. Would one of these be a better match for the group?

i'd go with the avenger, myself - i recently read a bunch of those powers and it seems like what you're looking for with a matching of front-line and arcane.

The barbarian is a good choisce though if all you want is a front-liner

I'd say you can't go wrong with any of the three, but if I had to choose one, I'd go with the Barbarian. Though if you're truly concerned with the lack of Arcane, Swordmage is most likely your best option.

I would think the best choices for melee and control are primal pedator druid, ensnaring or shielding swordmage (Swordburst alone is worth it), or an earthstrength warden.

Go with the sorcerer dragon build and waste a few feats on armor. They'll be right up there with the cleric and dwarf bashing away at the baddies, as well as having the ability to throw out the occasional controller spell. Not to mention they really do a lot of damage with at-wills. If you want a more warrior type character hybrid with a fighter. You'll have your secondary ability be the primary for the fighter class and you'll get some cool stuff like armor prof for free. They basically out damage anyone else at melee attacks, plus you can turn any ranged attack into a melee attack with one feat. Really its everything your looking for. Unless the DM is looking for a balanced game, then your just screwed if you pick the sorcerer.

I would say go with a Drow Darklock. I have one at 11th level and he is great.

I'd go with Swordmage, or maybe Sorcerer. Either one has alot of up close and personal capability.

I never tell the players what classes the other players are playing- although I do take steps to avoid 3 Wizards for example.

My personal answer is- play whatever the hell you damn please. What appeals most to you? If I had told you all about the campaign world and the classes and races you could play before you knew what the rest of the party play as- what would you pick?

To have fun in DND, or indeed any RPG, you should not have to optimise your party.

Play the character that you want to play. Listen to their suggestions (and the suggestions of the people in this post), but do NOT play any suggested classes unless you would actually want to play that class.

Now let me ask you a question. Given the party make up, and ignoring any and all suggestions given by your new group or people in this discussion, what class would you enjoy playing in that group? Once you have answered that question then that is the class you should play.

(Outside of one-shot adventures and such...) Never play a character/race/class that you do not want to play.

It's not arcane, but a Wild-Shape Druid is both melee-oriented and a controller. And damn fun to play, t'boot. Especially an Elf Predator; speed 8 is fun. And that combined with a Slide 1 basic at-will and a Slow basic at-will, you can also go part-defender, helping to keep the bad-guys off of your allies when the dwarf can't make it.

Anyway, just a thought. And there's no reason you couldn't reflavor it as a mage that uses Polymorph type spells to change form, either.
