| #1britefireAug 08, 2011 9:09:16 | Before anyone asks, we play 3.5. Well, at the end of the last dungeon, I came across a hatching blue dragon, who now thinks my character is its mother. Now we have a hatchling blue dragon following us, and no clue what to do with it. Any ideas? |
| #2slobo777aAug 08, 2011 9:20:47 | You are outside the rules, and so ut depends very much on how open the DM is to your ideas, and whether he/she has some ideas already on how it is going to progress. 1) Sell it 2) Attempt to "train" it (technically this is a sentient being, so actually you'd be raising it and educating it, but this very much depends on how the DM is seeing the situation) 3) Take it on adventures as a cute sidekick (thereby allowing DM to enact a plan, or at least give them opportunities to play baby dragon NPC). 4) Strap it to a stick, and pull it's tail to make an attack with your improvised staff of lightning |
| #3britefireAug 08, 2011 9:30:05 | I would train it or take it as a sidekick, but the dm isn't sure how to treat the alignment conflit, it says in the MM that blue dragons are always lawful evil, which could end up being an issue in a neutral and neutral-good party. |
| #4ToeSamaAug 08, 2011 9:59:57 | The creature's alingment is subjective according to the DMs whims. I've never known a DM worth their salt to play by the rules 100% of the time. That's just boring after all. |
| #5zeratulcraftAug 08, 2011 10:16:29 | We had a similar situation with a red dragon, mostly the DM figured we raised it to be good, but it had deep instinctual rage. The dragon took Barbarian levels, that was that. |

Blue dragons found on adventure are "always" LE, but they are also sentient beings, and you are the new parents of this one. Perhaps you could be making a point by raising this one with a few more morals than normal - at least you'd be starting with a creature that has some inherent regard for behaving consistently, and perhaps even honourably in its own way. Perhaps you couldn't get to LG, but you might reasonably achieve LN. The outcome of your discussion sounds as if the DM is not too sure about which way this is heading either. If the fun has worn off for the DM, and you don't have any plans which the DM is happy with, then it might be an idea to "park" the creature with a trusted NPC. If either you or the DM have a cracking idea for it later on, it would be easy to write it back into the story. By the book, this creature is effectively a CR3 monster for the next ~5 years. The rules for it behaving as an effective NPC party member would put it at effective level 7 (and if you followed this route, it could even gain class levels). Not sure how that compares to the PCs? |
| #7mousewithchainsawAug 08, 2011 12:17:14 | Yeah its best as a minor NPC for the dm to control for fun and humor more then anything else, though most players dream of having/being a dragon for breath weapon nuke death every 1-4 rounds a baby isnt bad as long as it stays such. As for the always lawful evil thing, there is a "sanctified creature" template in BoED if it really comes down to it |
| #8britefireAug 08, 2011 15:44:48 | Thanks for the help, the DM will probably let me raise it, and having it have class levels is a good idea (if the dm allows), I wonder if it could channel its evilness, if the DM rules that evil is instinctive, into music, blue dragon bard anyone? ![]() |
| #9therion666Aug 09, 2011 5:17:41 | The creature's alingment is subjective according to the DMs whims. I've never known a DM worth their salt to play by the rules 100% of the time. That's just boring after all. Generally it's a dragon so it's going to be a bit greedy for gold and gems but unless the DM has other idea's the dragon could become an ally. Maybe LN in alignment based on how you brought it up. Obviously don't expect it to 'empower' you character by flying around and attacking at your whim, it's still an NPC but it could add an interesting aspect to the game. If you bring it up, train it the creature could magically advance in years or size to become a mount (possibly), with a genie wish or similar Overall, ask the DM if you keeping the dragon is a good plan for the campaign and if it becoming a mount could be an option in much higher levels. |
| #10RodimalAug 09, 2011 13:37:46 | Blues while evil tend to be the most honorable of all the Chromatic dragons (not that thats saying much). When we use Blues in our campaigns in the way yours is going, they can be any alignment on the good evil neutral axis, but they are always Lawful. They are loyal to their 'parent' almost to a fault, will accept their 'parents' companions as their own -as long as the companions show the similar loyalty- and as long as they get 'shineys' to play with, be mostly content. Basically how we do it; is that one quarter of your treasure -usually in gems and gold, but sometimes magic items- goes directly to the dragon as its horde. out |
| #11yellowdingoAug 26, 2011 5:20:24 | I would train it or take it as a sidekick, but the dm isn't sure how to treat the alignment conflit, it says in the MM that blue dragons are always lawful evil, which could end up being an issue in a neutral and neutral-good party. Treason is any act deemed an assault on the State. Thus all crime is an assault on the state and the only condition under which a life may be taken is if they have resisted arrest under charge of Treason. So any Police officer taiking a life without a warrant charging Treson is in violation of the Law (thus being guilty of Treason). Sedition has by Definition any act causing government, law, constitution, sovereign (including acts of Government, Law, Constitution, Sovereign) to be held in hatred and or contempt is a seditious act. So Any Government Official or Sovereign not seeking the consensus of every citizen is committing an act of Sedition and ultimatly Treason. So if you teach your Dragon the Absolute immutability of Law, then the conclusion is that even Law is unfunctional and chaotic. |
