| #1babysitterMay 16, 2009 22:12:29 | So in the session tonight, my DM foreshadowed a big ol' clash between armies for the next session. The enemy will have tons of knights, demons, and "big hulking rotten-flesh things," while our army will consist of soldiers of Heironeous and the party. A few sessions ago I, a Paladin of Heironeous, obtained a "Black Sword of Imaskar," a sword with a bunch of imbued spells, including a gate spell 1x/day. According to my in-game dream, our army will be plizowned, so I was planning on utilizing the gate spell of the day to push the battle in our favor. I want to summon the strongest monster possible, and since I wouldn't be able to control the strongest extraplanar monsters due to HD restrictions, I would want to summon a Lawful Good (Or at least NG) creature so that it would help us by its own free will. What would be a good choice for a buff Good Extraplanar creature to fight by our side? Edit: This is 3.5e if it matters. |
| #2fatalis_902May 16, 2009 22:34:59 | I might be wrong about this, but I'm thinking a Solar would be a good choice. That thing could probably take out a rather large portion of your enemy's army without breaking a sweat, unless the knights are really high level, and it can likely hold its own against most of the demons, at least in one-on-one combat. Plus, as it is Lawful Good, it will be more than happy to hep a paladin and the army of Heironeous, especially against demons and what sound like undead abominations. So yeah, there's my : summon a Solar. |
| #3dawnbringerMay 17, 2009 7:16:30 | Are you going to be fighting Yugoloths? If so, a level 100 Justice Archon will fight the army for free. Page 80-82 Monster Manual 4. Otherwise a lower level one would fight for you if you come up with a little payment. |
| #4babysitterMay 17, 2009 9:34:31 | So yeah, there's my Wow. A couple days ago I was really bored so I just looked through the monster manuals to see what the highest CR monsters in them were. I saw the Solar as the strongest one in MM2 (IIRC). I don't know why I didn't think a freakin' angel would be a good choice, but I'll definitely summon one. Of course that's if the level 100 (!??!??!!!!) Justice Archon thing doesn't work out, I still gotta research that a tad. Edit: I just whipped out the Monster Manuals. I'm probably missing something, but the Justice Archon is listed as a CR 6 enemy, with advancement by character class (Paladin). For dawnbringer's example Level 100 Justice Archon, would that mean adding 90+ levels of Paladin? I'm confuzzled ![]() |

It could be 20 levels of paladin, 10 levels of prestige class, 10 levels of prestige class, 10 levels of prestige class and etc. |

It's a good idea, but I'm pretty sure my DM doesn't want me breaking his massive encounter THAT badly, plus that would be a lot of work to advance one that far. I'll just stick with the Solar :D Thanks guys |
| #7october_darknessMay 17, 2009 16:17:48 | If you can commune with your deity, then you can Gate in their avatar. I know this would work in 3.x, not sure about 3.5. |

I'm not sure how many level 100 creatures there are in the world... but I don't think getting it to do your dirty work is that easy of a task. And of course, "In the case of a single creature, you can control it if its HD do not exceed twice your caster level." So you can't force it to be summoned unless the sword casts gate at caster level 50+ (wouldn't that be something!) |

Well i'm sure i remember a part about the summoning that allows you to call a creature that you can't control if it's willing to come. |
| #10AlanBruceMay 17, 2009 23:55:50 | Well i'm sure i remember a part about the summoning that allows you to call a creature that you can't control if it's willing to come. Given that the OP serves Heironeous and will be fighting hordes of demons and undead, my guess is that Solar will jump through that portal before the PC can explain the entire situation to him. Regarding control over the Solar, that depends on your DM. Maybe he'll let you "play" the Solar until the spell's duration expires. If so, i'd suggest trageting the undead with his signature arrows of slaying. The DC to resist them isn't that high, but it's a fortitude save, something undead suffer terribly at. As for the evil army, I recall this particular angel casting as a 17th level cleric, on top of a plethora of other SLA cast as a 20th level caster, so crowd control should be a given. |
| #11mock26May 18, 2009 12:59:18 | Summon a gate with a "Do Not Enter" and a "No Tresspassing" sign on it! :D |
| #12babysitterMay 18, 2009 15:02:47 | Summon a gate with a "Do Not Enter" and a "No Tresspassing" sign on it! :D Nah, that wouldn't work. Evil things are stupid enough to challenge the gate. |
| #13mock26May 18, 2009 16:43:30 | Nah, that wouldn't work. Evil things are stupid enough to challenge the gate. And while they are occupied with challenging the gate you can then attack them or flee. |

| #15babysitterMay 20, 2009 21:09:01 | There is plainly only one option! Yog Sothoth! He's your friend, honest... That's actually quite situationally funny. My DM's campaign is very influenced by Lovecraftian lore, and we're fighting an army commanded by some of the old gods' commanders. When he asks me what I'm summoning with my gate spell, I'll say Yog Sothoth. If he laughs I'll say "Haha, just kidding, I'm summoning a Solar." If he doesn't, I'll have to break out into Yog Sothoth's chant and teach a quick lesson about DMing >=D |
