I've played D&D before but only at the local conventions.  As for having a stable group with multiple sessions, not going too well.  Where can a player find a group or how does a (Could learn to be a-) Dungeon master create a group?
Also, if anyone knows what people do these days to play DnD online (Not the MMO), could somebody inform me where I need to go to find and play with an online group?

I've tried Meetup before, no real luck in the local area.  Though it's nice to see that this site actually has a forum for this kind of stuff.

So now that we fixed online situation, where do I find a group in the real world?

I had to become DM to get my group together. Started by picking what version of D&D I wanted to run (3.5e).

I went onto eBay and found myself the three core books. Dungeon Masters Guide, Players Handbook and Monster Manual. Reading the DM Guide and Players Handbook cover to cover I went looking on youtube for tutorials and googled information about area's I wasn't 100% sure on.

After that I started a game and played solo by myself, creating a character and doing a quest so I knew I could run a session. At this point I knew a lot and started making my own quests.

My first quest was a basic adventure in a big city and I ran it with only 2 players. This pre-quest was the beginnings of the main adventure series. The second session introduced 3 more players and the original 2 became the leaders hiring the new players into their group to aid the quest.

If you still not sure, google it, come here and ask. If you’re in the middle of a game just try and make a good guess.

Go for it and good luck.

That IS for the real world.  If you look, it has different areas of the world.  Just find yours and post an ad.

I'm assuming you don't have a local game shop, because if you do, that's the very first place you should be checking.

Barring that, look for a place that hosts Living Forgotten Realms or D&D Encounters. While those specific venues may not be much your speed, going to those events will help you network with other gamers, and you get to basically audition for each other, by playing together in a "pick up" style group, so that you can link up with gamers that are more your style.

We used to have a hobby store nearby, but now that I'm old enough to understand this stuff they closed it.  Just my luck.  The other closest one is... well not that close.

www.wizards.com/DnD/Event.aspx?x=dnd/4ne...

Try this page here type in your zip and this will give you locations that are running D&D events.  Now you don't have to play the game, but it will lead you to people who are obviously interested in D&D and maybe even other roleplaying games in general.

To MiniatureGeek, You'd think I tried that.  Now I can go to these places, but I can't drive well enough and can't walk 6.5 miles to either one of the hobby stores "near" me.  Sucks doesn't it?

Krusk.  Yeah, why isn't that working?  I typed my city and nothing recent showed up at that site.  You'd think the capital of a state would have more players.

Weird I live in the woods of mine. I get an email once a month about a new game. What filters are you using?

I logged in for the first time in months and can't figure out how to use the site anymore. Just fill your info in, what games you are looking for, how often ect, and you will start to get emails about local games.

I also forgot, but obsidian portal .com works much better. It has a google maps listing of games near you. Unfortunatley it doesn't limit them to just open games. (IIRC)

Wait, buy a bike. Also if you can't get to a game 7 miles away, RPGmeetup or anyonline group meetup site won't help.

I have my search radius set to 40 miles at RPGmeetup.com.

Sounds like you need to bum a ride to games, set that up and get to your game stores.

If you live in the capital of your state, there's a good chance you have a bus system that you can use to traverse that 6.5 miles. No walking, no driving. Just, you know...waiting.

Yeah, it will likely take an hour or so to get to and fro, but most city buses are cheap, and after a month or so, you might be make some friends that will be willing to give you a ride.

Now thats an idea I could use.  I'd just need to figure out the bus system in that case.

dang it sucks to be in the situation your in now.

however, your going to have to learn to drive most of the time to get a group together since people intrested in this stuff rarly live within a short (without a car) distance, somtimes you can find people playing at a gamestore.

Am I glad I live in one of the most densely populated countries in the world, and within 30 minutes cycling of a big city. And some smaller cities and towns.
