I haven't played since 4.0 came out and my friend decided to host a game and said I could play, using anything out of the players hand book.

My question is what class/race should I play? I was kind of leaning toward warrior or perhaps a rogue or a ranger but I'm having a hard time picking what to play, could someone give me some advice or opinions?
(oh and no I don't know what my party is going to be yet)

It's hard to say, because it's mostly a matter of personal preference, but here's my take on it.

Some classes seem more mechanically complex, or demand a better sense of game tactics to avoid hindering the party. Fighters have a lot of work to do to protect the party, warlords need to be very aware of the entire parties capabilities, wizards give you spellbook choices to struggle with.

For your first game, fighter is good if you have an additional defender. Ranger seems to be mechanically simple and tactically safe, the closest thing to a "beginner class" in my mind. They give you a chance to see how powers and combat play out before you take on any more complexity.

Go for a defender - even if your party already has one, more are better.
If you're undecided between defender and striker, maybe try a Tempest fighter, and multiclass into ranger at some point depending on how you want to balance the defender and striker roles.

A paladin is also relatively easy to play. Just pick one enemy and wail away. You'd also have a bit of healing ability that can come in handy.

Well, fighters seem great but honestly i'm still split between them and a ranger...One of my friends let us roll higher level characters once and I did a ranger, had tons of damage and survival, I easily escaped situations that would of got me killed while I simply shot at them from a distance.

Then agian, while I know a little about all the class, I don't know much, or have much experiance(Most of my GM's quit or host horrible games)

Bow rangers are great at higher levels, and they aren't very difficult to use.

I would have to say that your friend is dead wrong. Just last night we had one of our best rp sessions ever. I really did not expect the PC's to talk the Dred Emperor out of attacking them.

Just go Ranger. Pick your preference of bow or two-blade combat, and completely ignore the Beast master option, as a companion complicates things.

You're not "essential" to the party, so screwing up in your Role won't hurt them as bad than if you had been a Defender, but you can still contribute immensely to the party as you learn the rules, especially if it turns out that you're actually a decent player and don't screw up at all. More often than not, people make pretty decent Rangers, so don't worry.
