Ok, I have a bit of an issue with one of the players I game with. Mainly that he tends to run roughshod over the party and has nearly gotten us killed by charging in and setting off a trap instead of letting us check first. He issues orders and does things without letting us have a chance to RP and make our own desicions. I know that he quit doing official sanctioned games because he has a tendency to lose his temper and yell about in-game events. He seems to think its fun for his character to be rude to mine and make racial slurs against him. (my guy is a kobold) I'm hesitant to go to the DM with this because he's not really the type who can enforce his decisions. Right now I'm actually thinking of having my character murder his in his sleep just to get the point across. (yes, I know that's a bad solution but if I RP realistically and keep IC it's inevitable)

1. Just because he gives you orders, doesn't mean you have to follow them.

2. Talk to the rest of the party, see if they're as fed up with this guy as you are.  If the rest of the party, ICly confronts him and tells him to either shape up or ship out, thinks should change.  Make sure, though, that it's clear that your characters are upset at his character, not all of you at him (even if that's the case).

With a player like this, killing his character won't help; his next character is almost certain to hate kobolds even more, and will exist for the sole purpose of killing your character.  Take the high road.

Sadly, agree with previous poster. Otherwise, the sort of thing you can do is LET him charge ahead and set stuff off (not like you can stop him, sounds like) and watch the fireworks from a safe distance.

If by ordering around and not letting you get a word in, you mean he says things like "I run in, and the Kobold follows me" then, of course, you're entirely within your rights to say "WHOAH! The Kobold does no such thing!"

Let us know how it goes?

It was more along the lines of "I throw the kobold to the top of the statue to check it out".

The others, including the DM just go along with that crap.

Here's my two coppers:

1.  Try to talk to the DM anyway.  It's his job to take care of these situations.  Who knows, they might man up and just do it!

2.  Try talking to the player in question and let them know they're taking things too far and making the game difficult for you.  Maybe to help have the DM be there with you.  That way you can back up one another.

3.  Talking to the other players is a good route too.  But be careful when you probe them for their opinions.  You don't want it to look like you're simply looking to complain about the guy.

4.  Be willing to walk.  When I moved to Texas that's what I had to do.  One of the players was a jerk, I went to the DM about it but he was real limp-wristed, so I walked away from the game.  I had better things to do with my time and there are other groups out there.

I think that last one is the most important.  Always be willing to walk away.  If no one else will stand up for you, do so for yourself.

Well Sockmonkey my friend, I'd suggest selling him to a pack of gnoll slavers! Wink

Haha, or I'd suggest as previously mentioned - IC diplomacy and maybe try to sort things out without too much bloodshed. Of course, if diplomacy fails, gnoll slavers is always a go-to choice!

The degree to which that sucks is, to me, unfathomable. If you can't tell him, OOC, "look, that's not fun for me" then do it IC. Tell the DM you ready an action to stab him in the groin next time he tries to manhandle you without your consent.

Might not win, might make tense room, but what are your other options if they just won't listen?

And not to make this about anyone else, but you're always welcome to try checking out our chat. We're actually nice people who try to make things fun.

Thanks for all the repies guys, I'll give the chat a try. I'd actually fogotten there was one. I'll try and work it out OOC but if I can't I guess it's time to pull a black mage and have stabbity time.

If he is physically picking you up and throwing you at things like you suggested... do everything that the rules allow to negate this - he would have to pass at a grapple / you could escape and roll to save if you consider it not in your best interests.

I would ask the DM and players straight out if his actions are upsetting them also. No need to beat around the bush. Be frank and straight up, tell them that his actions are upsetting you and you are not one to complain but if something is not done to curb his playstyle, they will lose you as a player (and mean this - if no support is forthcoming, leave)

And do not let his actions bully you. Confront him IC why he is doing it and explain why his actions will eventually get you and the others killed. Everytime he settles down to sleep, throw a veiled threat his way so that he knows your character is not happy and that you may coup de grace him in your sleep.Find ways IC during social situations to put him on the backfoot with NPC. He would have to be thick not to see the consequences that may happen.

Are you a rogue? If so, I'd set it up without him knowing that you'll coup de grace his ethnocentric jerk character.

I again advise against killing his character, awake or asleep.  That just creates more bad blood between players.  If this guy is known for having a bad temper, then I doubly recommend against it.  PvP never solves anything.

If the rest of the party won't ICly do anything about him, then OOCly tell him that the way his character is acting is ruining your fun, and the game is supposed to be fun for everybody.  If he persists, walk.

Yes he's a rogue.

I'll probably just have to threaten to walk though as several people have suggested.

The question was, "Are you a rogue?"

What class are you?  Can you post your character build?  Maybe we can give you some options.

But, yeah, PVP is never a good call unless it's already been established it's cool in your game.

Do the other players follow his lead and his orders when in combat?  If so, does the party do well in the fights that he takes the lead?  If the answer to both is yes, walking away may be the best course.

I have a good sense of tactics so if a PC I make is at all oriented towards combat the other players tend to look to me to take charge in combat.  Makes it rough when I want to play a PC that is not geared towards being the leader in fights.

However, I make a real effort to ask other players if they have a problem with my PC having a strong voice in tactical planning and shouting out orders in combat.  If they do then I lay off.  Last game I was in the players playing the fighters always looked to me to take charge.  The player playing our main magic using PC, did not want me telling him what to do, so I didn't.  In character I justified it by my PC saying to his PC "Magic is your thing, do what you think is best and I will adjust tactics when needed".

The point of the above paragraph is that you should talk to the overbearing player and let him know you can handle yourself in combat and he should focus his leadership on the others (ie the PCs that don't mind being ordered about).  If his not cool with that then you have another incentive to walk away

I still think it'd be cool to assassinate his character, behind the scenes of course. All ninja status.

We are currently a three person adventuring party so tactics-wise our actions aren't terribly complex.

Perhaps momentarily.  However, thereafter, one or more of the following will happen.

1. Control Freak Player throws a godawful fit and ruins the game night for everybody.  May result in violence if his temper is particularly bad.

2. Control Freak Player creates a new character who takes an immediate dislike to Poster's character, not only resuming the circle of bad blood, but escalating it.  May kill Poster's character in his sleep for literally no reason other than PvP revenge.

3. Since the other players and the DM are ambivalent to Control Freak Player, they may get mad at Poster despite him/her being the wronged party.

If you kill his character in his sleep (or even awake), you're just being another kind of disruptive player, wallowing in the same feces as he is.

Is he playing a Martial class?

If he is talk to your DM about letting him hire a flunkie or two, that way he has somebody to boss around and your party gets beefed up a bit.  If one of the flunkies is small enough he can toss it, rather than your PC, around looking for traps

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of bringing up at the next session. I'm just worried about it backfiring and having two PCs abuse my character. I'd hate to have to walk away though, it's the only live game available to me at the moment.

If you think he would treat the flunkie as another PC, ask you DM to give him something like the Human Gaurd from the MM, change name to Man-at-Arms or Sellsword, and make it clear to the player that this is an NPC follower that he only has direct control of in fights.  As an NPC the DM can take control of him at anytime.

I wouldn't go outright killing the guy...

But if he's running into traps, then he's causing his own damage.  This is damage you (or whoever the leader is) is not required to heal.

If he's not going to respect the party outright, he WILL respect the healer - or, he'll wish he did.

The rules don't force anyone to be considerate to the rest of the party, and as such you cannot force this character to be considerate to you.  But he rules also don't force you to put up with that garbage, either.

When he's screaming for a medic, that would be the perfect time to remind him of karma.

Sounds like your DM - and the other players - isn't just a moron but an enabler. He probably thinks it's funny to watch your character go boom, and thinks the racial slurs are hilarious (I blame Internet chat rooms and YouTube commenters). Plead your case in real life that this IS NOT fun for you, and that you want things to change. If worse comes to worst, just leave the group and find a new one. Mr. Jagnozzle will select another player to harass, and they'll quickly learn that it's not funny when the stupid crap is happening to you.

well odds are your both the same gender but this i think will work: sneak into is room, climb over him with a dagger to his neck and use and intimidate roll on him saying "i just want you to know this: i can kill you anytime i wish and there is nothing you can do about it so just keep smiling and walking when you see me.."

worked before when i play a female rogue with issues against a queen who wouldnt keep her mouth shut......dm just I-rate when showed him it wasnt bluff roll.

just spook the npc: it gives your character power over his WHILE giving you some sense of violationg his/or her some fashon.

The best way I can think of to handle this is to take the guy aside and say "Hey, I don't really understand where it is coming from but I want the in game racial slurs to stop. I understand it is ___ v kobold but it is similar enough to real racism that I find it offensive. A little friendly animosity is one thing, but the physical acts of violence, and treating my character as less than a person needs to end." For some reason this usually works best if you are not a white male.

Honestly though, the guy seems like a big enough prick that even after you have this talk he will make a big deal about how you can't handle a little bit of guff and still be a totally crappy guy to hang around. Its worth a shot though.
